Just bought one for twenty dollars on ebay... Ken Rockwell had the early version on his worst lenses ever .. (with the text on the inner part of the lens ring) . I got the newer version, with the text on the outside. I liked that I.could get 85mm at f/3.5..

Anyone have experience with the later version of this lens?

I must have had an older one: It wasn't very sharp at any aperture. I could see air bubbles in the glass of the rear element. Didn't keep it very long. Hope your newer version is a good one! Try it out, but don't expect it to be really sharp wide open. $20 sounds like a steal just for the novelty of it.

Googled Nikon 43-86 for images. Pretty sure it was on the inside.
In fact, even the pictures of that model are soft! (Just kidding) I used it for newspaper work in the 70's so the softness wasn't really a huge issue- nothing was very sharp on the printed page. The biggest issue was lens speed. I went back to primes- 35 f2, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and had extra bodies to mount them on. The first good zoom I bought was the Vivitar Series 1 70-210.

I have been thinking about trying to buy something at a good low price to attach to my Fujifilm S3000 Finepix camera. I like taking long shots but the stock lens 1.2.8.3.0 6x..optical zoom 1-6- 36 mm does not do the job.

I am an old fart that lives on a very low SS income and can not afford to buy anything new or another camera. This one takes very good pictures but would love to have one with a much longer range.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It does not have interchangable lenses.
The only thing I see that was available for it were tele and wide angle adapters:
Tele Conversion Lens TL-FX9/FX 9B
Wide Conversion Lens WL-FX9/FX 9B
You might be able to find them on e-bay.
That camera is almost 10 years old.
Ancient by digital standards.

I prefer the term "experienced".
Like the the kind of cameras sold at KEH sinatraman suggested. If it's in your budget- that's probably the best advice.

(BTW- You probably should have started a new thread for this one. Might have had more responses...)
