are there differences in canon camera models when trying to set live view

morning, i have a canon eos rebel xsi with ef-s 18-55 is and ef-s 55-250mm f/4-5.6 is lenses. not top of the line, but effective for me for now as a newcomer to dslr photography. i have been through some of the tutorials and have been through the instruction manual on how to set live view. i know that some say that you really do not want to shoot in live view when freehanding, understandable, that you really only should sometimes use it when on a tripod, but i cannot get my camera to set this function. whether i plan to use this function or not is beside the point. i still want to be able to experience it, whether i need it or not. i bought the kit used, for a song, maybe this is the problem, that the function does not work so they got rid of it. caveat emptor maybe? any input would help. the local camera store is no help, they just want to send it off.

I'm not familiar with the Rebel XSI, but you might have to enable Live View in the settings somewhere. You stated that you have studied the manual, so I'm guessing you have already tried this. Unfortunately, that's all I've got.
Although, Live View may not be available in all shooting modes!

thanks so much, i did not see this tutorial. i went through so many that it gave me a banging headache. this one helped. so many stated that you have to press "this" button, but would not say what button "this" is. this video also says to push "this" button, but acually shows which button, so now setting up that function is solved. thanks again. :-D

I have the same camera and you put it in creative mode like av tv or manual and then press the set button to the right of the LCD screen. This function is excellent on a tripod becuase when you use the manual mode because you can see your exposure before you take the shot. Also you can zoom in on a subject and manual focus which gets you the most out of the kit lens. Here is an example of a picture in live view mode with manual focus on the kit lens.

my model has the live view function, it is in the menu, only will not set it. guess i will have to send it in to have it checked out, although it is a function i can live without. it does give one more options.

No, I don't use any filter. Just post processing in lightroom and i Usually underexpose the foreground a bit and base my exposure on the sky when shooting a landscape so i don't lose any color.
