Walking through a Bavarian forest in 1946, I was intrigued by the huge, grotesque trees which had a Grimm Brothers fairy tale look. Then an old woman emerged, stooped under a load of brush. OMG, could this be Hansel and Gretel's witch? She walked by without a word.
