Reading that PICASA is a great Photo Editing Programme I finally downloaded it today. The first hint that all was not right was that it went through my whole computer including 2 External Hard Drives and made an "Index" of every picture there is. That includes not only my photos but ANY PICTURE! I immediately tried to stop it and couldn't.

The download said that no photo would be moved from my files and that they were all safe

I looked up "Help" and found only marketing stuff that decided me to take it in the first place. No Manual. I went online to find myself floundering around up to the waist in marshmellow. Meanwhile my files were teeming into the programme until it had them all (there is a point to this!) so I decided to try PICASA out. I got stuck - back online for help - none. I tried to get into the PICASA forum but the words I had to copy were too hard to read, and the spoken words were so distorted I kept getting them wrong and kept getting rejected.
As I couldn't find a way to get my photo off the workspace (guess how every other programme I've ever used does that?) I turned the computer off.

I went back into PICASA determined to delete its index. I started by deleting advertisement photos - r/click>delete - and it worked. No way in the world to select the whole lot and delete them all in one fell swoop though so I was ready to spend hours deleting one file or folder at a time. GOOD THING I DIDN'T!

I decided to find an unimportant photo in my collection on an external hard drive, then found it via PICASA, brought it up and deleted it. GOOD THING I DID! Because the photo had GONE from my album on the external drive and I found it, later, in the Recycle Bin.

I disconnected the external drives and uninstalled Picasa. At least the uninstallation worked, which made a change from anything else it would do.

Not to be beaten I reinstalled a new copy (externals disconnected) thinking I'd be more selective in the options I downloaded and all would be ok. But no! IT DID IT AGAIN. And wouldn't stop. So I hit "uninstall" in my Control Panel while it was running and got quite unceremonious, and vocal, while I waited. The good thing about it all is that I'll never have to do that to PICASA again.

Work out the ramifications of all that for yourself. But remember the word PICASA and be warned. And don't recommend it to others unless you know something I don't.

I use Picasa 3 daily. It is a fairly simple, straight forward program, and I can still access PicNik through Picasa 3.

Are you saying that it can't do for you what it did for me? Your comment is of no use to me unless you can tell me where I went wrong, or what you do right. But thanks for the comment anyway.

On UHH, several photographers have discussed Picasa 3 with imbedded Picnik. To my knowledge, we are all happy with both program, and I have read of no complaints similar to yours. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/search.jsp?q=Picasa+3&u=&s=0

I am sorry to read about your negative experience with Picasa. Before we completely trash Picasa, lets just see what other users have to say. Maybe someone can identify your problem, and a remedy.

Yikes! So that means all my photos -- 1000s and 1000s -- are now part of Picasa only? Meaning if I no longer want to use Picasa they would all be gone? Some are on an external hard drive some are not. ok ok scold me now. How should I keep my photos?

Yes. I'd like that. I'd love to be wrong, but Picassa shouldn't allow a mistake like that to be made.

Basically, the same happen to me... Took total control of pictures and wouldn't let me do a lot of things... Now, this didn't happen to me once, but after 3 times of installing and then deleting I finally woke up and deleted it for once and all....
It is no more for me............

No. That's not what I said. I'd not have risked ditching the programme if I'd suspected that. Mine remained on the external drives but I proved that Picasa could delete them even so.

I'd say the photos I could see in Picasa were either copies or shortcuts. But I didn't try to see them with the externals disconnected. Silly me.
I suggest you disconnect your external drive and see what's still in Picasa. That'll tell you and you won't be risking anything. If you do would you mind letting us all, and me in particular, know?
But don't delete anything by way of Picasa unless you want to delete your original file.

Not necessarily. Not everyone's yapping their heads off on UHH. And it's amazing how many people get dealt with badly without even complaining. So if you hear of one that's probably representative of a thousand.

What Mike said is true. Picasa downloads every picture from every source it can find when first downloaded. I've learned to live with that fact. For some reason it is set up to store all your pictures.
Click on the photo you want to work on. That will replace the previous photo in the workspace.

Similarly, just this week. What the hell was "that" image doing there? Ended up uninstalling.

I use picasa for a website storage just for showing my pictures. I use other editing software, have already saved the originals, off the computer, and haven't encountered a problem. Are you-all talking about using picasa as an editing tool? This is concerning to me.
