I've lived in Virginia for 44 years and have never seen a Cardinal ....... until a few minutes ago. It was perched on limb about 50 feet away.

Unfortunately I was on the phone at the time with my daughter and didn't have time to run and grab camera and get back before the Cardinal had flown away.

I have to say ... the most beautiful red I have ever seen. You just can't duplicate that color.

Since they are in the area, buy them a bag of sunflower hearts. You'll be posting cardinal pictures before long.

DB, I once saw the Giants beat the Cardinal's, but I've never seen one of the birds either!
But then again I've never seen an oriole or a bald eagle or a golden eagle either.
But wait, here it comes...., wait for it....., I have seen a seagull!!!!

They love rhododendron bushes, so if you plant them around the area where you put your feeder, you will get cardinals. My sister has 6 pair that have consistently come to her feeder for many years. I had rhodies around my house and the cardinals built nests in them. Once you plant them, put grass clippings around them every time you cut the grass and those bushes will grow like crazy. Pine needles too, if you can get them as rhodies love acid soil.

Yup, what Bill said! Especially now that you know you've got one around!

I moved here 21 years ago. I live in Chesterfield and go to maymont a lot very picturesque. Chances are if you go there you will see a cardinal. Well worth the trip. :-D

We all have had our missed big photo opportunities. I don't know how many times I've failed to capture a key moment because I wasn't ready - either waiting for something else to happen, or I just couldn't get my camera out in time. Best thing is to not think about it too much once it's over.

There are no more giants. They were wiped out by the government as a result of pressure from PETA. They were beating cardinals. :D

Your refreshingly wry and witty humor is always welcomed Jerry!

We get them eating sunflower hearts, as noted above. They don't like the tube feeders, but they will eat from the ground or a flat platform.

Like I said in my OP -- that color red is virtually unmatched!
Thanks for your picture taken yesterday.

I need to visit. My wife went to Maymont over Christmas to see the lights - said it was spectacular!
