This is an image that raises questions rather than answers.
Must mean something to you so why did you take it?
Why BW?
What do you feel makes this special or different enough enough to warrant showing on a photo forum. Its a scene we are all familiar with.

Its not unpleasant the more one looks the more at peace one feels so whats your story or was it a random click as you settled back on the sun lounger?

All the birds are flying away from the viewer and that makes the image rather impersonal to me. I can't connect with your subjects as much as I would like to and as much as I would be able to if they were flying toward me. I would also be very interested in knowing what you were intending this image to convey to the viewer. I agree pretty much with what Billy posted.

Sorry to have made you both think deeper than I had intended. A failed attempt to try to get the birds to have a separated look from the back ground…more depth if you will. Thanks very much for taking the time to comment. It is appreciated.

Hi, Frank,
As one who has made a few such images and viewed and studied innumerable similar studies of coordinated and uncoordinated flock/mob flight of many bird species, I personally am fascinated by such images. For example, this is a mob of gulls which, within a second or two will be characterized by the great majority of the gulls loosing altitude and heading / "wheeling"
right. This image contains at least seven "guide" or ""index birds" that clue us as to where this mob will be going within a few seconds.

It is really fascinating and instructive to see images made by researchers with camera delivering a moderate FPS rate to study changes in direction of mobs and flocks of different species. I don't mean to imply that such images are photographic art, they are used as a research tool, predominantly in behavioral studies, as well as in population estimations.

With some experience the ability to predict changes in flight direction and altitude allows some compositional decisions to be made.

Dave

Quite interesting comment Dave. Thanks for contributing your wisdom. The kids love to feed them and I have tried to capture the feel of standing under them, but have not managed to do so yet. It is some kind of sensory overload being underneath so much movement while not moving yourself. This shot of course was from standing behind.

What a contrast - since Dave wants to UNDER stand them!

Frank, I bet it is amazing to be in the midst of a gang like that!

Jenny, I was going to leave our conversation in minniev’s thread where it was. Since you have for some reason decided to illicit a further response from me here, I will give you one. I am a bit hurt though, as I see you are picking on others also….I thought maybe I was special. Do take note that the audience in this thread is not near as large as the ones you are used to in the other threads.

Your response to me in minniev’s thread was uncalled for. Intelligent discussion revolves around facts and theories of things…..not belittlement of others. You first made snide comment of images I cropped with permission of the OP. I responded with specifics based on your comment. (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-370814-2.html) lower page. You then responded with subject matter I was not disicussing, trying to pass my opinion off as something entirely different and claimed I was ignoring and redefining something. (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-370814-3.html) third reply. The subject of “space" was then clarified even more with my response but apparently hit a nerve as you then proceeded to belittle me with your personal attack. Nothing is accomplished by personal attacks, it generally degrades the conversation into worthless rhetoric rather than enlightening the participants with knowledge or ideas to ponder. I find it ironic you chose to participate in a subject on Listening, Guiding, Growing. If you think feeling intimidated for anything is a good thing for anyone….then the time I have spent here tying to help you was wasted. Maybe you meant to use a different word. At any rate I hope you will reconsider your position with me….a simple I’m sorry will do, if meant….other wise I see no point in further communication.

There's are times we need to defend our position and I understand that, as long as we do it with respect. We're all people and we're all learning!

Seriously though, its a beautiful day, get outside and enjoy this amazing day! S-
