I have a Nikon D3200 and I'm interested in a fast walk around lens but not sure what to buy any suggestions? I'm new to this so please have patients with me.

What lenses do you already have?

Are you 'walking around' Boston doing street photography?

Do you prefer walking in the wilderness looking for critters and birds?

What kind of range are you looking for?

The Nikon 35mm F1.8 or 50mm F1.8 are good fast primes for your camera.
One of the best deals in a fast zoom is the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8.
The best FAST zoom would be the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, but its a bit pricey. "Fast" is never cheap.

Dosen't matter if you have a Nikon or a Kodak...

I use an 18/135 as my walk-around-lens and am MORE than pleased....

This may not meet the OP's criteria for "fast", but otherwise the range is certainly useful as a walk around. I agree with the recommendation of 17-50mm f/2.8.

Joanne, welcome to the Hog.
I have a 50mm f1.2...., that lens can walk around sooo fast I can't even keep up with it and am completely worn out at the end of an outing.
So I suggest one that a little less hyper than my 50!!!
Good luck with your quest!!!!

If your walking around, it doesn't matter where or what your shooting as long as you can capture 80% of the images you see you want to hold onto. So with that in mind I would choose a telephoto 15- 20 on the low end and 105-120 on the high end the f stop you choose will of course determine the price your willing to pay .Good Luck !

I am really happy with my Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-f4 OS lens Using it on an Canon EOS 50D. It is stabilized, fast, sharp, delivers great color and contrast. It was $360 or so about 9 months ago. It is a Global Vision Contemporary series lens with compatibility with their Dock. I haven't gotten the Doc yet. Also, Sigma will re-configure the lens for another body for a reasonable (to me) fee.

On your Nikon that's a full frame equivalent of a 24-105 focal length--a very popular walk around range.

I would look at renting a Nikon 16-80 mm. Looks to be a versatile lens.

I would look at something like this 18 - 200 DX lens. Being a DX it is fairly compact and not too heavy. The zoom range gives you a field of view equivalent to a 27mm to 300mm on a full frame camera. That should give you a nice range for everything from landscape to wildlife.

No lens is perfect, but I do own this one and it is very handy on my D300.
