I have a HP photo scanner with the inserts for scanning slides and negatives. It works great on the color slide scan but when I try to scan film negatives. I get a tiny (35mm) scan of a negative. I assumed I would get a scan with a positive image. Am I just to stupid to assume that or is there something I'm doing wrong. My software allows me to select film negative before I scan.
When you change to "negative" you may have to reset the DPI resolution of the scan to get a larger image. I use Epson and not HP so I don't know for sure but thats just a guess based on the information you have provided.

When you write about your HP Scanner and the inserts I have to assume you mean the 35mm slide and negative adapter that rests on the glass scanner bed. This adapter holds the slides and the negative strips in place as the scanner passes beneath the bed. The adapter also has a light build into it for scanning.
You must be sure the adapter is plugged into the back of the scanner, and then select the adapter from the main HP menu; see attached image below.

Thanks MT. I'll do that but we still haven't resolved the issue of my image after the scan of a negative. It's a picture of a negative. In other words, all the image is reversed just as if you were looking through the negative in front of a light. I imagined that through the magic of technology, the scanned image would turn out to be a "positive". Go easy on me now, I'm not that smart.
Thanks Armadillo, ill look at that. I appreciate all the help.
