Macro On The Cheap!

Just for fun, I picked up a phone camera macro lens attachment at a local dollar store. Here's an extreme close-up of a tree trunk I took the other day using it; the lens was nearly touching the subject until I achieved focus. Obviously not a great lens by any definition, but as you can see by this example, it does have plenty of "character"! Perhaps I can make use of this feature in some creative, interesting way. I didn't pay a dollar to just shoot tree bark!

Any thoughts or ideas for potential projects using this lens welcomed.

I like it! Center sharp as with any simple diopter. At 100% you can imagine "the eye of the crocodile" in the sharpest area left of center. I bet you can find other stuff to play with the distortion. One thing that occurs to me is that you have to be shooting in the shadow of the camera (phone) when you're that close...

Thank you for commenting, Chuck. The bark texture certainly does look very much like crocodile skin up close. I think the lens will serve me best as an occasional special effect lens, rather than for any serious macro work.

You are correct, the phone's shadow was an issue; I had to tilt the phone just right to keep its shadow from entering the image area. Smart use of side lighting will be key when using this lens.

Hi, Rook,
I have to admit that my first thought of your tree bark macro was identical to Chuck’s...Haddabe a croc or gator.
I like the effect that, to my eye, does not immediately shout “Tree Bark”. There is a definite surreality imparted to your subject.
Cool.

I like how there is a pretty sharp area in the middle. Could be useful for creating backgrounds. Perhaps.

And I think that because the area outside the center is so blurred and distorted, the middle of the image appears even sharper than it actually is.

My first thought is I would try some ants or spiders and see if I could capture the moment.

Give it a greenish-grey cast and create a pattern out of it, then use it as dinosaur or alien skin!

The image itself serves only for purpose of demonstration; I'm more interested in potential uses for the lens.

Nevertheless, thank you for the tip, donolea. As I do occasionally use texture patterns in some of my graphic work, this image may indeed be of use someday.

Maybe I have been in FYC too long. I am starting to see things like others see a shot. I too thought it looked like it could be gator or croc skin. Your "investment" seemed to have paid off.
