The 3300 with the 24MP sensor gives your grandson the opportunity to be competitive with any other entry level kit for his class IMO. If the instructor mentioned or suggested Nikon, go Nikon.

Hey, I was super-serious by 13, and spent 33 years in the lab biz. 8 of them were as a multi-image photographer/writer/producer. 7 were as a photographer trainer.
He might just get bit by the shutterbug!
Me too. Our High school had camera club with a darkroom and we did most of the sports and activity photos for the Yearbook. Now most schools contract the photography out to local studios. At least our local school system(Walled Lake,MI) still teaches film photography and B&W Darkroom work. IMHO it is the best way to learn and understand the fundamentals of the craft.
Better yet...buy the new body you want and give him your old one (assuming you use a DSLR right now).
I just posted a Nikon D2Xs with Nikkor Lens. This is a professional grade camera. Newer cameras have higher pixels, but nothing beats this weather sealed tank!
I gave my granddaughter a D80 for a starter. Most all high school classes hit on film, but move to digital. Any of the cameras mentioned by others would work well. Good luck, as a future photographer is in the works!
Wow!!! I never expected the overwhelming response to this question. Thanks to everyone...everyone! All good suggestions and ideas. I can't lose sight of the fact that this is not, repeat, a final kind of a purchase as far as my grnadson is concerned. This is a high school class in photography. He may never get bitten by the same bug that I (and all those on this forum) have been so investment in a high end system makes no sense at this time.
For those few who offered a used unit...thanks for your interest and support for this project. I am weighing my options so please don't think I've blown you off. I need some more answers from the prospective user. For example, I'm assuming the instructor will be happy with a normal lens (kit), but perhaps he would prefer a wider range tele. Hang in there folks, and thanks again,
...and, by the way, I'm surprised also that there is no apparent intention of tackling film and darkroom work.
