I hope this is in the right section.....

We're driving from Tacoma Wa to Alaska in July. Beating feet to Fairbanks (figure it'll take 5 days) and then hanging around that area for a week before we head home. I've got, and ordered, all kinds of travel brochures....but if anyone knows the area, or has been, do you have any suggestions for photography? We're not hikers.
Thanks,
Bob

Wish you the best. Share your experiences!

My wife just retired and we have that trip on our bucket list. Next month we're going by cruise liner but next year we plan to hit the road too.

I think I read , there is a bear viewing area off Cassiar Highway. Salmon should be running on your way up or down.
Don't know if frost heaves(?) will be a problem. You'll learn quickly to watch for them........

Christmas s\Store in North Pole.

Fairbanks---Riverboat cruise on Chino River (2-3 hours long). I really enjoyed this!
Big gold mine tour and you get to pan for gold, see a big slush(?) trough work and it was impressive (Maybe, Eldorado Mine).
Somewhere in town there is a nice display right next to the pipeline that talks about it. Have your picture taken there.

Google, what to do in Fairbanks...
Watch for buildings not built correctly over permfrost. They sink and tilt....

Sounds like a great trip!!!
Post images when you return!!

Tacoma to Fairbanks in 5 days is do-able, but you will not stop much. The speed limits in Canada are 100kmh..60mph..but once you get north of Fort Nelson the frost heaves and rhe RVs will keep you below that. There is no cell service to speak of north of there either..take what you need.

Remember that all of the road work that gets done up here gets done during July and August. Expect construction, mud and gravel.
Gas in Whitehorse yesterday was $1.55 per liter

Someone mentioned the "milepost". That is very good information and advice.

Enjoy the trip, the scenery is beautiful.

Have you considered taking the Alaska Marine Highway to Hanes either on the way up or back? It takes about 3 days to reach Hanes from Beillham, Wa., but the views you get are incredible. Then, the drive from Haines to Fairbanks takes a couple of days.....two nights out. Are you driving an RV and camping or will you be in a car?

Fairbanks, be sure to go to the University Alaska Native museum, and they also have a quite nice banitical garden nearby. The riverboat trip is fun, and touring a gold mine is within reasonable driving distance. If you have time, the bus ride through Denali is awesome........caatch the green bus at the entrance, takes you all the way to wonder lake and back.

Otherwise, Fairbanks has some wonderful galleries and also a city museum.

Have a good time!

Good advice from everyone, especially the Milepost. There are four major roads leading in/out of Fairbanks; the Elliott (North towards the Haul Road and oil fields); the Steese (Northeast and ending at the Yukon River); the Richardson (East then South through Delta Junction and ending in Valdez); and the Parks (connection to Anchorage). There's lots to see on any of them, mostly wilderness, and many photo ops along the way. Good luck, travel safe, and welcome to Fairbanks!

Thank you all..good stuff. I just ordered Milepost from Amazon and had to google "frost heaves".. :-) I'll wait a bit and print this post so I don't forget anything.
I have a GMC Terrain, so we will be hotel/motel'ing it the whole trip. My wife is an avid museum visitor, she reads every word under every exhibit...me? I'd prefer to be out with camera in one hand and a cold beer in the other taking pictures....but, we've gotta share passions.. :-)
Yes, I know we will be hauling a** to get there, wander and haul it back again...but, we've only got 20 days and I don't want to miss my 45 year high school reunion when we get home..
