I had a shutter failure on a 500cm and didn't find out until the proofs came back from the lab. (This camera synced at all shutter durations up to 1/500 sec.) Almost all of the proofs were totally black on a portion of the proof-- mimicking what happens when you shoot with flash at shutter duration shorter than allowed.

Several years ago we had just entered the Great Smoky Mts. National Park when I noticed several cars parked on the side of the road. People were standing on the edge of the woods pointing at something, so I grabbed my camera and quickly determined that they had spotted a bear. While they all remained on the edge of the woods near the road I headed into the woods in the direction that they were pointing, determined to get some bear photos.

Sure enough, after a short trek I spotted the bear which was then about 25 yards away. With my long lens I zeroed in and began shooting. After a few shots I suddenly heard a loud scratching sound coming from directly above me. I looked up to see two very cute bear cubs coming down the trunk of the tree that I was standing in front of. At that very same moment the mother bear that I was focused on reared up on hind legs and let out a menacing growl as she started toward me. I didn't realize that I could run that fast....or that commercial laundries charged so much to launder men's pants.
Several years ago we had just entered the Great Sm... (show quote)

But did you get shots of the cubs?

2013 went to Okinawa for two weeks to visit family. Went to and photoed all the cool places; aquarium, castles, beaches, tide pools and most important, grandkids. Lost the SD card before archiving the photos. Forgot to mention photos of Japan, South Korea, Guam and Hawaii. VERY VERY SAD. Think the card went off the desk into the trash.

Don't usually do this, (post twice on the same thread), but the quoted post reminded me of really bad screw up made many, many years ago. Early 1960s I was a young Air Force enlistee assigned to C-130s, meaning I spent almost my entire enlistment overseas, mostly in S.E.A. the year is 1966 and I've just spent two rotations to a small exotic country called South Vietnam. Having purchased my first 35 MM SLR I have taken dozens of rolls of Kodachrome. Upon rotation back to the World the Air Force sends us to Taipei via military aircraft where we lay over "til we take a civilian bird home. Yep, you got it; I left said camera and many, many rolls of slides at the hotel in Taipei. Kinda reminds ya of that "check list"...

Somehow when I realized I was stupidly positioned between mom and her offspring I completely forgot about the cubs!

I went on an underground shoot at a mine in Western Australia last week. My standard lens for this kind of work is a 10-22, because you're shooting in very cramped conditions and there usually isn't room to take a couple of steps back. Lighting is difficult, too, so I also took along my Nifty Fifty for the 1.8 capability. I was so obsessed with the lighting issue that I shot only with the lens wide open, not taking into account the very shallow depth of field. And I've been doing this stuff for 10 years or more! Blush! Needless to say I didn't get much usable stuff from the Nifty, but I was carrying two cameras so the wide lens saved the day for me. Problem is, if I can make a dumb mistake like that at 78, I wonder when I'm really going to get my head around this photography business!

I pretty routinely leave settings where I know they shouldn't be. My most frequent is turning VR on or off when on or off tripod. FourtunAtely my newest lens Nikon 200-500) makes this a non-factor.

My most recent (last week) was leaving bracketing on...in this case only one out of five images was at the exposure I wanted. Fortunately I shot in RAW and a lot of images so got enough good ones out of it.

I did buy one. Still have it for ebay stuff. It has "great" ISO, goes all the way to 1600. I also had a 3.4mp Olympus. Then I got smart.

Wow! Mistakes... I could write a book. In present times I can think of two. One is I was asked to shoot a family group as a favor. I agreed, trying to be nice, and I informed the family that I am not a family photographer but I would do it. They seemed to like the images – but they were really awful and I have vowed never to do it again. The second mistake is one I am working on. I shoot architectural and real estate properties. I always go for the greatest DoF. When I switch genres I still tend to capture greater DoF. It's difficult for me to grasp bokeh and embrace its value. Usually, I shoot between f/7.1 and f/22. When I go to f/1.4, f/2.8 or even f/5.6, I feel like I am making a technical mistake even though I know I'm not. It makes me feel uncomfortable.

I know I am slow to reply, but my checklist of mistakes would include many of those already listed. My worst mistake took place while on a trip to Sicily during the summer. The trip was about 2 weeks long and the temperatures were very warm, so I put my film in an ice chest filled with ice to keep it from spoiling...little did I know that the film canisters wouldn't keep moisture out of the film canister. End result was some great photos with really big water spots! Second worst mistake was leaving my Nikon FA in the trunk of a rental car for 30 minutes in July in Panama City, Florida. This time the end result was a fried camera. Live and learn!
