I-TTL flashes for Nikon D5500

I have a Nikon d5500 and I would like to know what flashes, other than
Nikon speedlites, are totally compatible (i-TTL) with this camera. I have
looked at some info on internet, and it appears that the only units are
Nikon. I thought that if a flash was lasted as i-TTL, it would function
accordingly. HELP!!!!!!!

Take a look here. Several claim iTTL compatible with Nikon.

The problem, none mention the 5500. I downloaded the complete manual from Nikon, and it appears others in the d5--- series are different. Love the camera, but don't like to be snookered.

TTL is specific to vendors. So for Nikon you just need to be sure it is compatible with Nikon TTL. There are a few that I know of Yongnuro comes immediately to mind.

i-TTL is brand specific but many 3rd party speed lights are TTL compatible. There are several that claim to be i-TTL but many of the reviews state that they are trying to confuse the consumer by claiming TTL and i-TTL are the same. I have a Nikon SB-800 (great speed light but cumbersome menu) and a Nikon SB-910 speed light that has a great menu but not quite the power of the SB-800 (Nikon solved the over heating problem of the SB-900 by having the SB-910 slow it's recycle time as begins to get hot so that it can cool. The SB-900 would shut down.) I have shot with the Yong Nuo which originally claimed i-TTL and then dropped it to TTL.
Here is a link to a grid of some of the flashes and compatibility. http://dpanswers.com/content/nikon_flash_models.php

OK, When they say, "TTL compatible with Nikon xxxx", do they mean on-camera only or do they imply CLS also.

Don't bother getting a flash that supports high speed sync. The d5500 doesn't support it. The Yongnuo YN468-II costs under $100 and works well with I-TTL on the d5500.
