They were at an outdoor shooting range. AFTER the meeting. Outside. The accidental discharge was not from "cleaning" but "clearing". Two completely different things.
Yes, it was a horrible, unfortunate accident. But in no way did it happen in the manner your article would present.

While clearing your gun one of the rules is that you make sure the muzzle is not pointed at anyone. Really stupid on the part of the person handling the gun.
