I can't even figure out what the point was supposed to be. I am as old as those guys, and I would never think of doing that, even if full of good beer.

The only thing I can figure out is that they were trying to balance it centered for a photo.

Clearly no engineer in the bunch if that is the case. I would have just put in supports at each end and hidden them: Engineering photoshop!
