So, I have just purchased my first DSLR and want to buy some memory cards that have as much memory as possible. So many to choose from. Any suggestions on what I should look for? Specific make, model, class, etc....

If you need SD cards here's a link to NewEgg.com sorted by buyer ratings:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007962%20600006200%20600082443%208000&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=20

I tend not to buy the biggest card but one or two steps below - still plenty big for my needs but without the bleeding edge tech price tag. Right now good quality 16 gig cards go for around $20 (give or take)

Always look for Class 10. After that you want to look at the write speed. This will be very important if you are shooting multiple frames per second, especially in RAW. You will see that the cheap cards are about 10 MBs/sec. The faster the write speed, the more expensive they are. Personally, I would not go any slower then 20 MBs/sec.

You now just need to decide what size and what speed your wallet can afford! For me, the breaking point was about a 16 Gig card.

Not all class 10 cards are created equally, for sure check your write speed of the card. I use Transcend from Amazon never had a problem with them.

I buy SanDisk Ultra SDHC, 8 GB, class 10, 20MB/sec, at Adorama. They are 10.95 each, if you buy 3 or more they are 9.95.

That's what I'm talking about. You mention SD, CF, or XD. What are these and what are the differences? Is one any better than the other? I don't want the most expensive or the least expensive.

Another question. What about backup?

They are the different types of cards offered by todays DSLR's. Different cameras take different cards and you said nothing about what type of card you are asking for recommendations on.

Okay. Sorry about that. I'll have to see what card is in the camera. I just thought that maybe all would fit and each had different characteristics. I'll revisit when I have more info. Thank you.

Then you take SDHC cards. Your camera requires Class 4 cards for still and Class 6 for video. 8GB cards are probably the best bet for the cost, but there is nothing wrong with buying 16GB cards if you find a deal and are willing to risk the loss of that many pics should the card fail for some reason. Class 10 cards will work also but the extra speed is unnecessary as write times are limited by your cameras write speed, but the price of Class 10's has been dropping and they won't hurt anything.
Nikon has tested Sandisk, Lexar, Sony and Panasonic cards that are approved (at their storage levels) and recommended for your camera as per your owners manual.
