I like Vanguard. I have two Tracker 4s - no longer being made. They make good sturdy tripods at reasonable prices. I originally bought the Vanguard because I wanted one with a "liquid head" for video. It's not actually a liquid head, but it's just as smooth as one. Perfect for moving during filming.

Don't impulsively spend $150.00 on a tripod. Read, read, read, and then read some more, before you spend a dime.

Here is a link to a classic article about buying a tripod.

do you have a camera store in your area? if so, it would be best to get a hands on before you buy.

Issue to consider is the total weight of camera and lenses you plan to use. The other issue is portability. I prefer carbon fiber. Gitzo is the Rolls Royce and consider a Sirui T-025X Carbon Fiber Tripod with C-10X Ball Head . It will support 13 lbs. I have one and use it for traveling. Available from B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/917559-REG/sirui_bsrt025x_t_025x_carbon_fiber_tripod.html

Save your $$ - don't buy junk. Wait until you have a need for a tripod, then get the one you need. If you were to spend $150 on a tripod now, you'd just increase the cost of the right tripod by $150.

Don't just rely on reviews - go to a camera store and see the tripod.

Hold the tripod, pick it up, set it up, put a camera and lens on it, wiggle it about to see how sturdy it is, pack the tripod away, see what it's like to carry...... there are a lot of things you need to consider.

Once you have seen some tripods you may find a brand/make more suited to your needs within your budget.

btw I use a Manfrotto and it is the best tripod I have ever owned.

All good advice here so far, especially the suggestion that you squirrel away your $150 until after you've done more research (and it should be extensive) and then determined your actual needs. You will learn soon enough that photography is not an inexpensive hobby, but the best rule of thumb is to buy the best gear you can afford; in the long run you won't be sorry. As for a tripod, however, you will be cheating yourself if you do not at least look into Really Right Stuff. The RRS site has some really good information/advice. Yes, the bottom line will give you pause, maybe even take your breath away, but quality gear usually proves its worth. That said, yeah, the initial outlay is still painful. :D

Sadly I've spent more on a CPL filter than you're willing on a tripod. I think you will have a tough road to find satisfaction. I learned a while back, it's better to spend more once than continue to spend.

First of all, think about how you are going to use your tripod.

If you need one at home then you want big and heavy. On the other hand if you want to take it with you as you fly around the world or when you go on an extended hike then you may be looking for something more compact. You may eventually decide you need more than one.

Check out http://www.indurogear.com a good value, high quality, extended warranty if you do it on line, as I recall it is 10 years.
