No one will know what lenses you are talking about in your first sentence. Your posts go to the bottom so do not follow what you are referring to. You need to use "quote reply".

Thank you I am new to ugly Hedgehog and do not fully know how to navigate this site but I will learn with help like that thanks

I was wondering if anyone has used the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD All-In-One Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras ... I Have a Nikon D3000. I shoot for fun but have also been helping a few people out with Senior Pictures and the occasional low budget wedding .. I typically do not charge I just like to do it and hey I can help someone who can't afford a "real professional" ... Anyway I am looking for something that is affordable so I am not having to switch my lens so much ... What are your thoughts??

I was also looking at the Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM for Nikon
I was wondering if anyone has used the Tamron AF 1... (show quote)

If you check the DxO site for lens comparisons on various camera bodies you will see that the Tamron is slightly better than the Sigma but neither are really great. The DxO lens comparison charts will let you compare many different lenses on many different bodies. Try it!

BTW if you want a new Nikon lens and can wait a month Nikon usually puts a bunch of lenses on sale in March. I got the then $800+ 18-300 for $600 a few years back.

I got wondering how you tell the new (2014) Nikon 18-300 from the old. Nikon still sells both new. The new is $1,000 and the old $700.

The new has enhanced VR2... But it doesn't say that on the lens.

Then I noticed the new is f3.5-5.6 while the old is 3.5-6.3. On closer inspection there are a number of technical differences. One needs to line up the specs to see. It would be interesting to see if DXOMark has performance comparisons.

EDIT:

They do:

http://www.dxomark.com/lenses/brand-nikon/mounted_on-Nikon_D7100-865/launched-between-2003-and-2016/mount_type-Nikon_F_DX/focal-from-18-to-300/aperture_max-from-2.8-to-45/lens_zoom-zoom/sensor_brand-Nikon#hideAdvancedOptions=false&viewMode=list&yDataType=global

Surprisingly the new ranks a little lower by their criteria! Their criteria does not assess VR.

I agree! Good for you!

I have a Tamron 18-270 and love it. It's my favorite lens. I think of it as "all purpose" because, like you, I have a crop sensor camera, and it has quite a wide range of zoom.

I first found out about this lens when I bought a video on the D5500 by Michael the Maven. (An excellent video IMO).

In that video, when he talked about lenses, he mentioned this Tamron lens saying that when he traveled, this was the lens he took with him. I can understand why.

eta: Oops! I wasn't considering indoor shooting!

I've had two. The first was returned for excessive creep twice and had to be returned for bad focus. The forth time it was replaced. I've since given it away because once again, excessive creep. Stick with a nikon or maybe a sigma.

Mine has a lens lock on it, so it doesn't creep. I just have to remember to unlock it! lol!

This was any time I tried to shoot either up or down at a deep angle. Very disturbing trying to shoot flowers straight down and the lens drop all the way to the bottom or when shooting up vice versa.

May God bless you and your family for helping out people that would otherwise have no recorded memories in the form of photographs to enjoy in the years to come. That's all I have to say.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. A friends daughter had zero budget for a wedding photographer so doing her photos was my gift so her grandmother could enjoy the wedding instead of take the pictures. Another friend of the family is getting married and I agreed to do her wedding for free because her wedding money was used to bury her brother last year. My kids have friends that are low income and if I didn't do them for free they would not have had senior pictures at all ... I did not mean to offend anyone by my post. I just know my limitations and don't want to take credit for being a professional when I have a long way to go before earning that title.

Some people do not want a pro photographer to photograph their social event. Instead, they ask another photographer, not a pro, to shoot this event. They may choose as they please.

From experience, let me please caution anybody who contemplates hiring a pro photographer to take photographs of their social event. Visit the Web-site of any such photographer, to review the work of that individual. Pick a photographer whose product suits your need and taste.

I can tell you from experience that some so-called pro photographers have little practical experience in doing photography. One such photographer I talked with had taken photography classes, and then set herself up as a wedding photographer.

I have talked briefly with other so-called pro photographers at social events. From these conversations, I have found that they have more ambition than useful knowledge and experience. They present themselves well, and gain work this way.

Buyer beware.

Real good advice & well said!

It gets much worse on UHH. Some of the pros want to outlaw allowing people to bring their cameras.

Altough they are welcome to their views they'd never get near a wedding I was arranging. I liked the old days when they put a disposable camera on each table and collected them. Today you can just ask everyone to email you the images they take with their phones or their own cameras.

I'm more inclined to hire the pro for a studio image and not mess up everyone's enjoyment of the event.

We just went to a fancy wedding at the Motor City Casino and they passed around 3 phones on selfie sticks so the guests could do a small video of themselves talking to the bride & groom (advice, congratulations, etc.). Modern version of the disposable camera on each table.

Personally, I think it would be a big mistake for a pro to request that no one else is allowed a camera. Sometimes even the pros don't get all the shots. When our oldest son got married, they had 2 flower girls and one ring bearer. The ring bearer and one of the flower girls were brother & sister but the pro failed to get any pictures of them together...but I did (and all the family wanted that picture). I know he was concentrating on the bride and groom, but honestly, the kids stole the show (they were 4 & 6) and the bride & groom didn't mind because the niece & nephew were so dang cute!
