You could also try always using your middle initial or middle name when filling out applications, etc. With any luck, your 'alter-ego' does not have the same middle name.

You've probably noticed that when the news reports on an assassination, they always give the full name - first, middle, last - of the killer. That's to avoid confusion with people who have the same first and last name.

Good Luck! You could try placing a fraud alert on all of your accounts (it doesn't just protect you from fraudulent activity, it also makes it more exacting when people/creditors check your information) You could also try always using your middle initial or middle name when filling out applications, etc. With any luck, your 'alter-ego' does not have the same middle name.

Because my name is so common, I always use my full name when completing documents. I do not even use my nickname because "Mike" is such a common name.

Immediately sue the reporting agency. Get a lawyer! I will bet one would take this on contingency in a heartbeat!

At the end of last May I retired and moved to South Carolina to be closer to my sister and brother. I had lived in my NC home for more than 20 years.

Recently I decided to rent an apartment and I completed all of the necessary documents needed for approval. The apartment complex does a credit check and history report on potential tenants.

I was not approved by management to rent an apartment. Their history report stated that I had been convicted of two felonies for possession of child pornography and distribution. The report also stated that I was a 6 foot tall male who weighed 242 pounds. I am 5 feet seven inches tall and weigh about 170 pounds.

Needless to say, I was extremely disturbed by the information in the report. It turned out that the person with the felony convictions has my name and the same year of my birth. Why the reporting agency did not cross reference their information with a social security number is beyond me.

I took a copy of the report to the leasing agent at the apartment and showed her the information. It was obvious from the photos of the felon, that I was not that person. Still, I was not approved until I could work with the reporting agency to resolve the issues in the report.

Have any of you Hoggers had a similar experience?

My thought exactly. I suspect a letter to agency from your attorney would make them see the light. Good luck.

Welcome to the upstate. We moved here in 1996 and have enjoyed it very much. We have friends who live in Anderson. Sorry for the problem with the apartment.

I'm not a lawyer, sir, though my brother is. For this type of error, I wager any reporting agency would laugh out loud at such a letter! I posit this because when was the last time anyone read of some huge fines leveraged against these companies? Either the burden of proof is very high or the time and labor to obtain such proof must not be worth it for lawyers to pursue such matters. Put another way, when was the last time you saw a shyster lawyer advertise on TV to go after a Reporting Agency? I've never seen that? But sure, they'll advertise to pursue accidental injury, medical device, and prescription medication torts. Why? Because that's where the money is! Admittedly, that's just my perception.

Unfortunately, it does not. There are plenty of this kind of bureaucrat who walk amongst us.

My son got delayed on a NICS check for a revolver. It seems that a 45 year old child molester in New York had used my son's SSN when he was arrested. My son, at the time, was a Corrections Officer in Kansas and as a matter of training had run his own SSN and discovered this. Since that time he has not used the SSN on his 4473s. Criminals, when arrested, have no frigging idea what their SSN is--consequently they rattle off the first nine numbers they think of--they are generally more cooperative at that point in the process. I got chewed by a lead in firearms when I advised a friend not to use her SSN--he said it would speed up the process.

The bad thing about any of these reports (credit or criminal) is that they don't have to prove they're right. You have to prove they're wrong. It's hard to prove you DIDN'T do something sometimes! Good luck.

Fortunately, not on this end. However, I'm willing to bet there is some lawyer in your area that would be more than happy to take the case and sue them for this. I know I'd be looking for one.

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago when I attempted to buy a firearm. The background check came back the I was a convicted felon for aggravated robbery. The date and time of this crime I was charged with was absolutely absurd, as I was serving in Vietnam at the time.

I can tell you, it was an utter nightmare to get this erroneous charge and accusations removed from the Federal database. After about a year it was removed after being fingerprinted by the state of Colorado, submitting a copy of my DD214 showing I was out of the country at the time, and verification of my Social Security number. I had to literally fight tooth and nail to get this removed. And to think we have people in this country that actually trusts the Federal Government.

Best of luck in resolving your problem but get this taken care of, including threatening to sue the reporting agency ASAP, as it will follow you the rest of your life.

Michael, if the charge were aggravated assault, considering where you were, that might be difficult. Yup, I was aggravated and yup I assaulted a few people, with a deadly weapon. I'm glad you made it back home and thanks.

I have had horrible , experience two times, The IRS said my refund had been sent to me already. I told them you are the IRS for God's sake. And you can't catch these imposters ? Fours years later, I got my 4,200.00 dollars with 60.00 interest wow if I had owed them 4 years cant imagine the interest they would have wanted. The burden of proof is on you. Finally the truth came out, that a group of illigals, in Texas, and a similar group in Atlanta hacked thousands of people . for three years it took me around 6 to 7 month's to get my refund's. Now they send me a special code to use when I file, this year they sent the code, a couple weeks later they sent me a different code, they said they sent the wrong one two weeks earlier.Sorry for long reply but I got a letter from a collection agency 2,000 miles away I had to go to my sheriff and get a report. I find it strange so many folk here on Hog just how many have experienced these Dishonest people, but the IRS really disappointed me. People who want to go cashless is scarey to me. It cost a lot of money and time to get face time with these people, to verify they don't have the signature, and your correct information, they never in my case IRS did not have my signature on the alledged filing . Forgery, all these things cost me. the crooked, and lazy folk go on to the next victim .

When you showed up might someone have photoed you? All they have to do is change their felon picture and you are forever screwed. In your town, state is there any place you can file a discrimination complaint. Also a letter to the editor of your local newspaper might attract attention.
