I'd take my golf clubs, to play the courses on Kiawah.

Just pay attention to the signage about alligators. They really are an additional "hazard" there!

Thanks, Mtmn! Not a birder ... mostly interested in capturing Charleston details and beach scenes on Kiawah. My 14 - 24 is arriving a little too late!

Regards,

Jennifer

Sorry to say I don't golf. I know this is the premier place! Oh well. Off to the spa!

That's is exactly what I was going to advise op to do also.

the 18-200 should be great for overall use and the 105 macro for special shots. leave the rest behind and enjoy the vaca

Two lenses that I find cover a great range are the Nikon 28-300mm and the Tamron (or Nikon) 10-24mm. If you feel like you need extra length I highly suggest the 28-300mm, which would give you the field of view of 42-450mm. Those of us who have it are quite happy with it. It's an fx lens, so you get the center sweet spot on a dx camera. I use it on my D800, too, and am still quite happy with it. It's just versatile and sharp.

Not one of her options.

But if she were asking for new lenses the 18-300 VR2 is the better choice for a DX camera. My wife uses the VR1 on her D5300 and loves it. I have the 28-300 and rarely use it any more. Bit it's image quality seems about the same as the 18-300 and it lacks the wider angle for a DX camera.

While some DX lenses work OK in FX mode on a D800, at least over a limited zoom range, the 18-300 doesn't. You need to use it in DX mode on an FX camera.

You might want to practice with making panos from your 24-70 before you go. Easy to do with Lightroom. Overlap about 30%.

Try using portrait mode too. You can get some great detail in panos that way.

Rent one??

Also there are some plantations that are available for tour but IIRC require a bit of travel to get to and it might be too early in the year to justify the travel. http://www.magnoliaplantation.com/

I'd second the suggestion for the battery and surrounding area. Need to fill some time, here are a few more ideas http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g54171-Activities-Charleston_South_Carolina.html. Bunch of other suggestions on the Web, most of them good.

Relax and enjoy, hope the weather cooperates. Been on the cool side lately.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Bill! Headed your way this morning. I'll definitely bring a jacket!
