Shot this a few weeks ago. Was trying to see how I could use it. I have submitted the before and after. This was done in Photoshop using several grunge layers, 2 background and 1 boarder. Feel free to critique. If you have another idea please show us your example.

I like your crop and the diagonal of the perch adds to the interest of the composition. I'm feeling a bit closed in with the vignette and border together, kind of a lot of black. Also not loving the "grunge" on the water in upper right, as it detracts from your subject.

All just personal preference, obviously :)

Appreciate your observations Linda. I might rework it but needed some opinions from others. I was stuck in a rut with this picture but I liked the Heron and wanted to save the pose.

We all see things differently. I was drawn to this bird as a portrait with a subdued background.

I had the feeling the photo needed some balance. First it was opened in raw where the white balance was adjusted slightly. Then Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation were added.

Final was the addition of an extension to the left of the photo as viewed.

Of course what works for me, may not work for someone else.

I see these birds every day and wanted to try something out. Saw one today laying down on a dock. Never saw one do that before. Thanks for taking time out to critique SoHillGuy

I agree with all of Linda's comments and I really like Shakey's #2. By focusing just on the heron you realize what a beautiful bird it is. However your original shot is excellent. Interesting how people end up with different results starting with the same base.

Ol' Billys attempt. Great shot needs keeping natural looking in my humble uneducated rambling opinion.

Your natural looking, humble, uneducated, rambling, (yeah right, we believe that) version looks great, Billy
