Hi! I am wanting to get a monitor or something I can plug in to my MacPro laptop (3 years old) so I can watch a how to video on one screen and work in PS on the other. Can't be too heavy as I use this laptop on the dining table and need to move it. I have thought about an iPad, however I don't think it would work as a dual monitor. I have a dual on a desk that I don't use right now- the monitor is too heavy too move around and I need to replace computer different/larger storage PC. Any ideas? thanks!

Go to an Apple Store and tell them what you have and what you need.

Why move it...integrate it:

I'm not sure if it can be done, but how about just using a TV as the second monitor?

you can do it, but generally speaking the color will not be as nice as a dedicated monitor.

I use an LG 34um95, and while it's not heavy, it does have a large footprint.

Why I suggested it was that the OP noted he just wanted to use it to watch how-to videos while he was working on PS on his laptop. The color gamut wouldn't matter in this case.

Now I do connect via an Apple TV in our conference room to a Samsung 46" TV. It works, but I wouldn't want to edit off of it. You do need a line of sight from the Apple TV to the laptop.

As far as I know what you want to do can't be done. An iMac will let you do it, but you only have mirror function with a MacBook Pro. The video card isn't stout enough to allow what you want to do.

I may just try an app called Duet on an iPad. I think that will work.

You can't do that. When you plug in an external monitor to a laptop what you see on the monitor is what you would see on the laptop screen. I actually two computers side by side to do what you want to do.

Unless they have improved this (I tried an app 2 years ago with my iPad retina, original version), you'll have some serious lag issues. It worked in a pinch when I needed a second monitor on the road for traveling.

Go to the Apple Store to find the answer.

Really, just about any of these will work. These are 24" displays, but you can also go smaller, like a 19".

I've run dual displays off my MacBook Pros for the last 10 years. All you'll need is the correct adaptor cable for your Mac. What monitor port does your Mac have? I might have a spare cable laying around you can have, if it's one of the older styles.
