I've always wondered, nobody told me what it meant and I never asked. Well, live and learn, eventually.

We've all heard the expression “He don't know is ass from a hole in the ground.”
Well, the other day, after 88 years I was just thinkin', and it suddenly dawned on me: Ass – burro Hole in the ground – burrow, Yippee, now I know!
I guess I'm the who didn't know his....., eh?

50 or 60 years ago "he don't know his ass from his elbow" was also a popular phrase. Figure that one out.

So you're referring to"burro" and "burrow" - interesting. You may be overthinking that.

Manny Jay, I'll be in your debt for eternity. I'd have never made that connection. Probably, because I really didn't give it much thought. But, now that you mention it, I can see the connection and that you are a deep thinker.

The one I like is "he is so confused, he doesn't know whether to wind his butt or scratch hid watch."

I wonder if the "hole in the ground" and the "elbow" versions of this are regional. I have never heard the "elbow" version before and have always used the "hole in the ground" version but never questioned the etymology.

For me, it's always been "elbow," although I do remember the hole in the ground being used somehow or other.

You can spend several hours here "doing research."
