A City of various national architectures inside Paris

In the early 1920s, shortly after the end of the First World War, Paris had a severe shortage of living quarters for a rapidly growing student population. Two French businessmen proposed a unique solution, to be paid for by a separate foundation in each nation from which the students came. Each nation would have a lot, for which an architect from that nation would design a student dormitory reflecting dominant architectural styles of that country. It was called the Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris. The residents were not restricted to that nationality, however.

The first one was Belgium's, designed by Armand Giuritte and completed in 1924. Canada was next, designed by Olivier Le Bras and opened in 1925. The German building went up that same year, designed by Lucien Bechmann. In 1926, The Netherlands dorm was ready, designed by Willem Marinus Dudok. The Japanese building, opened in 1929, was the creation of Pierre Sardou. . Le Corbusier designed the Swiss Pavilion, completed in 1930. I don't have space to list all 40 of the buildings now being used. The Cite has its own Metro station.

I want to add this street scene showing the beautiful landscaping in the marvelous and unique student enclave known as rhe Cite Internationale universitaire de Paris. I took all these photos during a week's leave in April. 1947, two years and nine months after the Liberation of Paris from the Nazi occupation. All 40 of the current buildings are listed, with photos (not mine) in Wikipedia under the headline "Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris".

I might as well add two pix I made at the same time, one little girl in front of the Nenmark Pavilion, and a future French driver who already has the look of an earnest student. Both these citizens would be over 70 today.

Historical architectural photography, and a pair of wee street portraits. Interesting.

I love #3 and #6. The third one has a somewhat desolate feel to it with that lone man standing there in mid afternoon? Waiting for someone? Smoking? The setting ... his posture .. make me want to know more. I like photographs that create curiosity.

The sixth photo has a very dynamic feel to it. I just love the motion that has been captured. His gait is perfect and the fact that he's taking a puff of his cigarette at the moment the shutter was snapped gives it even more impact.
