I went to a local Photography shop to day, local dealer for Canon and Nikon. I asked if he had a remote release for my 3100. He sold me a Nikon ML-L3 Remote Controller. He checked it on his computer and he said it will work. He told me I had to set the camera to Infra Red and it will work. Well I can find anything on the camera that has anything to do with Infra red. I could use a little help, will this work, and does the camera have infra red?
Thanks

try moving the shutter release mode switch on the top right side of the camera to the rear - If I'm not mistaken the switch does: Single shot, Multi shot, Timer, Remote (going from front position to back)

I have a 3000 that doesn't have the same switch but I'm pretty sure that's what you need to do - keep in mind the infra red sensor (I think) is on the front of the camera, above and to the right of the lens (facing the front of the camera)

I read somewhere that the remote does not work on the d3100 and it is not in the supported cameras on NikonUsa.

The D3100 uses the MC-DC2 remote cord:
User's Manual page 177.

I saw the stuff on the MC-DC2, but the guy at the store assured me that the remote worked on the 3100. So it looks like I have to make a trip back down to the store to see if they have the right thing

Seriously??? So, Nikon put the infrared receiver on the 3000, skipped the 3100 and then put it back on the 3200?

Well, either way, perhaps you should take a look at the Yongnuo rf603 flash trigger that comes with a cable to operate as a wireless remote shutter release :) you wind up with wireless off camera flash in the deal - a win/win

$35 from Amazon:

I have the D5100, but I think it's similar to yours. I have to go to the Shooting Menu>Release Mode>Remote w/Delay or Remote Quick Release.
I use the ML-L3 and Vello radio-remote, both work well.
Note: My camera has IR receivers on front AND rear. Yours MAY only be on the front, I'm not sure.

No remote receivers are on the D3100, Sorry.
I have one and there is no such animal living there.
You can put a power grip made by Photive modle #PH-GRPD3100 for the Nikon D3100. It has the infra red eye for wireless remote operation. Available on Amazon.

Thanks all for they help. Mntman that is a good site, it really explains the camera. Maybe I will give the link to the dealer so he knows a little more about the D3100

It really surprised me that the D3100 does not have this.

I bought a D5100 last fall and as noted it has the infared sensor both front and rear. I use it all the time to get sharp photos with a telephoto lens on a tripod...I do mostly nature shots.

My daughter-in-law bought the D3100 at the same time. She is very happy with it and never misses the remote release because she takes handheld pics of people.

I too had assumed the D3100 had one. A surprising oversight. It isn't one of the things I looked for. I am glad I lucked out on this one and will be sure to check on it for my next camera.

I have the remote for the D3000. Had points at BestBuy and needed to spend them, so I got the remote for free.

I've only really used it a couple of times; once to take a self portrait and once at a party after I put the camera on a shelf.

It's just another one of those things that sit in my bag but perhaps will come in handy some day.
