Hi Hoggers, I am thinking of trading in my 70D and lenses for a mirrorless camera! I do a lot of hiking in the Sierras (CA) and am tired of lugging my camera around. With everything in my backpack it is just too much weight for a woman! My girlfriend who has a Nikon 7100 too has started to complain. I have researched a lot of mirrorless cameras and am stuck as to a decision. I love my 70D, especially the touchscreen, but the weight is killing me! Can you very experienced people come up with some suggestions! Thanks.

I own a Canon 70D and a pair of Olympus E-M5Mark II cameras and I am happy with them for general purpose photography.

The answer will depend whether you can live with a compact advanced point & shoot with a Leica lens and a decent 25-250mm range such as the Panasonic ZS100 with an electronic viewfinder - $699. Or you want smaller size/weight, but also want the creativity of interchangeable lenses and exceptional 4K video capability such as the Panasonic G7 - $999 bundled with a 14-140mm (28-280mm equivalent) lens. The G7 is significantly smaller than a standard DSLR.

Mirrorless is a bad word on this site. I do not own a mirrorless camera. But a friend traveled to Europe carrying a Sony a6000 mirrorless with 16-50mm and a 55-210mm kit lenses. Took fantastic photos. If you are a hiker, you may want to wait on the Sony a6300 coming soon. It is slightly heavier and more durable than the a6000. Price may be around $1000.00. Guessing. Check the reviews on each model.

Tiger, it's more a matter of priorities than weight. The only real way to make a camera smaller is to make the sensor smaller. If your priorities are size and weight over picture quality, then there are a myriad of small ML cameras available.
Look also at a Canon SL1. It's a very small chassis with a regular size crop sensor. Couple that with a nice non-L zoom lens and you have a pretty small crop sensor camera. Good luck!! ;-)

There is a camera, the Sony DSC-RX1, that is a compact full frame sensor, fixed lens, Carl Zeiss, 24 megapixels, Not your ordinary price either. $2800.00.

I was very happy with the Fuji X E-1 I took to Europe. It also accompanied me on several campouts, including a climb up Colorado's Mt Elbert last summer. APS-C sensor, fantastic lenses and amazing color in a pretty compact package. Battery life is usually an issue with mirrorless, but the Fuji was pretty decent in that area. Also look at the X-100 series. Fixed 35mm equivalent. They just announced another similar model that has an 18mm (27mm equivalent).

SS, why are you miss informing this nice member? You know your reply is complete bs. You can get a Sony A7 that is FF and put a prime on it or even the 28-70 kit lens on it for under $800 used. Small camera big sensor.

"Mirrorless is a bad word on this site." ?????? There have been a great number of discussions regarding mirrorless cameras here. Some may have become a bit heated, but many of our discussions do. I think one of the big advantages of this site is the passion of its members. Either a Sony a6000 or a6300 would be an excellent choice, as would lighter models of any make of camera.

The Canon SL1 suggestion is a good one. That body and the EF-S 18-200 lens is pretty light.

I personally enjoy hiking the dunes of Hatteras island in NC and always bring 2 bodies and lenses, a Canon 7DII and a 6D. This year it'll be the 7DII and a 5Dsr along with a EF 28-300L and a Sigma 150-600 Sport. But hiking the dunes at sea level is a lot easier than hiking the Sierra's.

I hope you find the right came around and enjoy your hiking...

some one said mirrorless is a bad word on this site.. I think that is changing. I was in a similar predicament with my photography (lugging all that heavy stuff). I Chose to go with the Olympus OMD E-M10 The smallest of there mirrorless line up. I chose this over others primarily based on the on camera stabilization system and price, also because I though they had better technology. I can't say I have never looked back cause I gots a lot of big cameras and lenses but I found that when I reach for a camera I always wind up with that one in my hand. I also, purchased a few lenses and an adaptor for my Nikon lenses. All my Nikon lenses work great on this camera too. I am about 8 months into this camera and I just ordered the OMD E-M1 (Olympus Flagship)... I am no longer looking back. Please take a look at some of my results with this camera (check out my flicker site). Anyway, just sayin. With this smaller camera I can climb any mountain and still get great pictures :) Have a nice day.

Mogul. On second thought, I have to agree with you. I bet there is chronology on this site discussing mirrorless vs non-mirrorless. I won't say bad word again. Thanks for the positive reply.

Mas, thanks for your response. If we didn't have differing opinions about what goes on here, it would be awfully boring. And if we were afraid to express those opinions, we wouldn't learn a darned thing.

Sorry, I thought she was trying to go lighter!!!! My mistake!!
The thought of being able to stay within her current system and interchangeably use her existing lenses could save her a lot of money.
Somehow that made sense to me!!
Have at it!!
