first attempt with lighting

here are a couple of picture's with my first attempt's with lighting.....nikon d3100.....55-300 lens.....set on macro....learning so I'm sure that much is wrong.....not afraid to hear what u all have to say tho....

What were the stats Tom, aperture, shutter, ISO, if you don't mind me asking? The image is well composed, the subject is fine, but it dosen't look sharp at all. 8-)

Seems to me these settings could be changed...ISO 3200 probably isn't helping at all.

It also looks like the flash was bare and almost on axis with the camera.

That could be right, he said it was set for macro.

The reds look blown out and the 3rd photo looks underexposed. You guys see the settings and Bmac has hit the nail on the head---the dreaded words when I was in HS, WE NEED TO TALK...........

Very soft focus unless thats what you wanted. Also too close to background. We see shadow on background. Dont take this advise the wrong way we are just tring to help. Good luck and keep posting.
