Camera storage cards

In preparation for a 'once in a lifetime' type of trip, is it better to carry larger storage cards in the camera (128 GB or 256 GB cards) or more smaller cards. If the larger cards somehow get corrupted then all the photos are lost, but with more smaller cards (32 GB or 64 GB) there is more of a chance of accidentally misplacing them and losing the photos that way. Also my goal is a new Nikon D810 camera and I have no idea how quickly the cards will fill as I have never owned a full frame camera, so am not sure of the right size cards to purchase along with the camera. Currently with my D7000 I normally take between 300-500 photos on my 32 GB cards before I download them to external HDs with my laptop. I am sure these are simple questions for pros, but these are questions on my mind. Thanks for your guidance.

For my money, smaller cards with a backup in camera if possible.

On my D7100 I shoot raw with a pair of 32 GB cards in the camera, one as primary and one as backup.

Have never filled a 32 GB card yet. (I am sure it is possible of course!)

Never thought about misplacing a card, more worried about a failed card myself, but would rather lose 32 GB worth of shots than 64 GB or 128 GB worth. ;)

If you do not have it download the free Nikon manual viewer and the D810 manual. There is a table in the back that tells how many images of each type will fit on an 8GB card. Multiply for larger cards.

I plan several of steps for my upcoming Africa trip with my D800. My primary SD cards are 32MB.
1. Set the camera for 12 bit compressed RAW.
2. Set the camera to save backup jpegs on the CF card.
3. Get some extra 32GB cards.
4. Back up the RAW images using the Rav Filehub plus.

How many pictures you plan on taking a.d how long you going for? Ask yourself this. But personally I think I'd go for the 32gig cards. I have both cameras and with the 64gig card you'll get well over 1000 shots per card.
It really sucks when a card goes bad. I was just on a trip and a 32 gig CF card went bad on me. Glad I only had in a 32 gig. That was in my D810. You'll get you normal amount of pics on a 32 gig card.

Hi, I am not a pro at all, but I use 32 gb and 16gb cards and have stayed away from larger cards. My Canon 6d gives me about 900 shots on a 32 gb card and i would think that D810 would probably give you 500 shots.

I use a small case for my memory cards and it is attached by a clip inside my camera bag, when changing cards, the case is opened new card out, old card in and case zipped shut. It quickly becomes habit and no misplaced cards.

Depending on how and how many you shoot, your storage needs may be different, if I had the D810 I would probably go to 64 gb cards but no bigger. I shoot raw only, not raw and jpeg.

I too worry (although I am not sure why) of a card failure and would not want to lose all my vacation shots! That being said my wife's little point and shot holds about 2500 shots on the her card and luckily neither one of us has ever had a card failure.

Have a great trip and enjoy your new camera!!!!!

I take along a 13" Mac Book Pro and 500 gig firewire external hard drive and back up my images to both of these every night, it's great insurance. Also, it's nice to be able to review a shoot and see if perhaps you may want to revisit right away, in case you're not happy with some shots, if there's time to do so.

I prefer 32GB in the highest speed possible. If you use SD, go with these and you will not be disappointed. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182602-REG/sandisk_sdsdxne_032g_gnci2_extreme_32gb_sdhc_u3.html

flyguy is correct, we assume you are taking a laptop and an external USB drive? I do a daily transfer of the day's work each evening for viewing and safe storage.

32gb cards are the largest I ever use. if you have a laptop, why not get an external drive and download your photos on a daily basis? have one copy on your laptop and one copy on your external drive for security.

You can also get the card caddy, a dozen cards and after the days shooting download as above and put the sd card with the files still on it in the card caddy and have a 3rd copy for when you get home.

This is not rocket science. Do whatever makes you comfortable. I do however strongly recommend Sandisk.

I agree with your thinking, I would not use large capacity cards for the reasons you have stated.
I use 16 or 32 gb SD cards and when they become full I replace them with another card, this means you will have your photos stored on your External HD and on your SD cards.
Therefore you will need to buy some extra SD cards, they are cheap enough, and you will have to ensure the spare and used SD cards are kept in safe place, I have a small pocket in my camera bag cover which is ideal for this purpose.

I think the most important thing is getting in the habit of transferring the images on any given card to a more permanent storage device (hard drive) as soon as one can (end of the shooting day). Larger cards offer more convenience. The failure rate of these cards today is negligible. And they are inexpensive. Anyway, that's my opinion.

32GB is plenty. If you were shooting film, you'd need 13 rolls of 36 to get that many pictures. When I travel, I keep the images on the cards, upload to an external drive and a small Acer netbook. I come home with three copies of everything.

I keep my cards in several cases like this.
