Hmm. Okay, given the range to target, the apparent focal length (longish), and where the camera seems to be aimed, I'm guessing she got a waaaaay tight closeup of her right eye.

I see nothing wrong with them, though for some strange reason I feel compelled to state that I don't shoot them :)
For those in teens, twenties, maybe even thirties, it's as has been mentioned in other topics: the popularity of social media and documenting every minute detail of one's life. So "older" folks don't understand that?
Maybe it's also the belief of some that no one
serious about photography would ever take a pic of themselves, even as part of capturing memories.

I seem to remember the same controversy when digital started to overtake film and I'm sure it was the same when consumer film cameras came out.

Hi, Steve! Personally I see
nothing wrong with selfies, except, as the links you posted show, they can perhaps be overdone. I think I "get" why people do them, although some of it does seem a bit narcissistic (such as the lovely young woman in the second link). Facebook eclipsed MySpace; Facebook in turn is being eclipsed by Snapchat, Instagram, and goodness only knows what else. There is, of course, a flipside, a downside, such as "sexting" that can destroy the lives of innocent hormonal kids who send things to each other that can get them on sex offender lists for life (and full disclosure, I think doing that to kids is beyond stupid). I also wonder how many duck faces the internet can support before it collapses under the weight. As I originally wrote, the selfie has been with us for pretty much ever. I don't think there has ever been an artist that did not do at least one self portrait, and most did several. Was it narcissism, or just that they didn't have a sitter and wanted to try something? I've done that in my studio (since my wife would rather have a root canal than sit for a portrait).

We sometimes tend to forget that every critique is just someone's opinion :)

Absolutely! Things "trend," become fads, and most eventually fade, replaced by the next new thing. I mentioned that I've been taking selfies for a long time. I don't think I overdo it. Honestly I'm a little embarrassed, chagrined... But I like using my own picture as an avatar, I was a portrait man, I have a camera and some skill, and (most importantly) I AM FREE! I am also cheap! So it makes complete sense for me to take bread out of the mouth of a working pro by bypassing him or her and doing it myself.

I clicked the link in your signature, read the whole thing with all the comments. It's a great piece, and so true. Everybody's a critic. Some can be harsh. I try very hard NOT to be, because (1) I don't like to be judged harshly and (2) I always keep in mind that my opinion is my own, and I could be wrong.

Come to think of it I still look like an idiot.  I just did a quick search and it appears the subject hasn't been seriously discussed, so what the hey, I'll open a thread!
I don't know why you want to discuss whether or not you look like an idiot, but I will add my .02 cents worth. ;-)
No, of course not! You most definitely do
not look like an idiot!
