I agree with that statement. Personally though, I prefer the second one. It puts me closer to the action and better sets the mood of the moment. Whenever I am in a canoe, the last thing I want to see is a big city. Just my thoughts.

Aesthetically # 2 is better. For contrast (subject, not light) # 1 is quite interesting, country life within the city.
