Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known as Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire and various other names and epithets,[nb 1] was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.

Alloway

Burns was born two miles (3 km) south of Ayr, in Alloway, the eldest of the seven children of William Burnes (1721–1784), a self-educated tenant farmer from Dunnottar in the Mearns, and Agnes Broun (1732–1820), the daughter of a Kirkoswald tenant farmer.[4][5]

He was born in a house built by his father (now the Burns Cottage Museum), where he lived until Easter 1766, when he was seven years old. William Burnes sold the house and took the tenancy of the 70-acre (280,000 m2) Mount Oliphant farm, southeast of Alloway. Here Burns grew up in poverty and hardship, and the severe manual labour of the farm left its traces in a premature stoop and a weakened constitution.

When copying text form the internet, remove the reference cite numbers: [nb 1][4][5], which are useless without the cites.

Nice shot and interesting commentary. I guess the severity of farm life left him with a short lifespan also.

Also, you can't copy & paste brackets here, the forum wants to treat them as HTML commands (see "Tags" at left when you post). You have to change them to something else, like {} or ().

You can still post. My comment was meant as an FYI.
I used brackets in one of my first posts, that's how I found out.
Regarding the citations, some people would wonder what they mean.

First of all, thank you for your post - it was interesting reading accompanied with a good photograph. One of the things I really enjoy about UHH is the international mix of people sharing their cultures and histories with the rest of us.
With that said, I hope that you don't stop posting because of a post of another member. I don't think any insult was intended, just some help in how to navigate on the site. I have needed help often and some present their 'help' differently than others, but take it as a positive and do keep sharing.

I liked very much your foto and your commentaries. I got lambasted once and almost stopped participating, but if I had I would not have learned as much about Robert Burns, his home and his short life. Thank you again for your sharing.
