Staithes is a tiny fishing port, now more of a tourist resort, on the North Yorkshire coast in England. Captain Cook was born there and in the days of sail it was infamous as a place where ships were enticed onto the rocks and their cargoes stolen by assorted pirates and smugglers.

Extremely attractive, Billyspad . Ironically, the boats really don't need mooring with the water at low tide ( I'm assuming"

Really interesting. That is a hell of a tide! I really like the colors and the ropes that hold the boats in place when they are floating seem strangely out of place when the tide is out and they are on the flats. I think they add some tension to the photo. Very nice work.

Once again, you seem to put much thought and care into your landscape compositions, Billy. A beautiful view superbly captured. Abundance of crisp detail and vibrant colours, but not over-cooked as some photographers would have done. I'm not sure the frame is really necessary, but at least it doesn't overpower the image.

It is indeed a lovely place, not a word Im fond of but it is quaint. The boats are probably owned by weekenders as its a very popular place for second homes. Hence the locals can no longer afford the property prices there.
Thank you for calling by Debbie and hope all is well with you and yours.

Glad you like it Erich. I think if you really like a place its so much easier to find the shots or maybe you get luckier?
Thank you for dropping by my friend.

For somebody that's so adept at HDR, I'm surprised you've left the shadows as dark as you have.

If it was mine I'd try to make more of a focus of that curved pier in the centre of the frame. I'd probably crop a bit off the left and lighten the shadier parts of that curved pier. The right hand side is fully justified, except maybe that the chalk cliff is the brightest part of the scene and therefore a bit too eye-catching when the focus should be the harbour and the boats.

The shot is well seen and well conceived, but I think there's potential still to be brought out.

I agree with you. The left is a sore spot, especially because this was a nice, sunny day. The background appears out of focus. Is this so? You can probably go either way: soft to keep the eye on the boats or sharp to be realistic. Therefore, selecting the right aperture and focal distance is important to getting the desired artistic intent.

PS There should be a rule against framing prints.

Hi Billy, Very good composition. I agree with R.G. There is more potential here. If my photo, I would lighten the left side to bring up more detail and make it more of a part of the overall photo. Would not crop left as boats I don't believe need to be cramped. They are floating free or will be when water returns. The houses on the ridge I would clone out, as just as the eye travels through, the houses above cause my eye to drift up not to back of photo. And I would bring up rusty red roofs in the far distance to further draw eye to back of photo. Would like to be at this spot to just spend peaceful time and watch the tide come in. Thanks, Sandy
