The fish in the first photo look like yellow tailed snapper. Making me hungry. You are simply too far away in the first two photos. Need to shoot them with a longer focal length, or get closer. The cardinal image looks fine, thanks for sharing. 8-)

I used my 300mm but maybe if I had braced/used a tripod I could have cropped in closer without distortion. I will try to crop closer to see if it is clear enough for posting. Thanks for your comments Bmac!

Have you ever used a tripod on the Gulf Coast Sand? It is not easy/stable either unfortunately....

Okay, so you were using a 300mm and on shore. Meaning you were very far away and you couldn't get closer. So your only option then is to shoot at a very fast shutter and crop in (as you said). What was your shutter speed for those shots? 8-)

Bmac:

I shot 300mm at f/5.6 1/320s ISO 400 AF auto for the dolphin playing with the fish breakfast....estimated 30 yards out from the shore.

I shot 300mm f/5.6 1/800s ISO 800 AF dynamic "sports scene mode" for the yellow tailed snapper fish school which was actually quite close to shore....less than 10 yards in the shore surf line. They were pretty small fish though.

Attached 3 other photos from that shoot which show relative distance to shoreline.

Thanks for the assist.

Added two more "max cropped" shots of the dolphin playing with breakfast fish and close-up cropped of the yellow tailed snapper school but only the two lead fish are visible.

Thanks again for the assist Bmac!

You are welcome Jeff, I like those photos of the Heron. The cropped picture of the yellow tails came out pretty good. Keep shooting and posting. 8-)
