The original was taken as a single picture. The HDR was made with a cheap program of Ashampoo. Looks a little overdone to me?

You could try to apply the Ashampoo hdr to a layer and then adjust the opacity and/or mask & brush away areas to reduce the effect. You can give the final image your personal touch.
I don't see where HDR adds anything in terms of the original intent which is to say: increasing the dynamic range. The second one doesn't open up any shadows or fix the highlights.
