This question is so stupid, I am ashamed to ask....but, when storing lenses in the lens bag with or without hood, should the lens cap face up or down?

I've always stored my lenses lens cap up. Perhaps in the deep, dark past I saw someone else do it this way!?...

Never thought about it, but I always store mine with the cap down. Force of habit I guess. Less chance of smudging the lens should the cap come off for my thinking.

Thanks to both of you! I feel better,...if the two of you differ, I don't feel so bad! :-)

Now, it's time for the curve ball. I store my camera with the left end (as viewed from behind) down so I can grab my camera more easily. In fact I do this with all my cameras. My lens caps are sideways.

Cap down- the front of the lens is usualy heaviest and bigger diameter. Less chance of tipping the bag over...maybe.

Same here, but only because it's the most practical space saving position in my camera bag.

I store mine down due to the first camera bag I had and have continued out of habit today. It seems what works best for you is what you should do.

Same with me, for the same reason. One of these days I'm going to put little labels on the end caps so I know which lens is which. Or, I could do what Whitman's Chocolates does and put a map on the lid of the bag.

I've always stored mine with the cap up. My reasoning has been that if the bag slips out of my hand, the bottom will take the hit first and I feel that the bottom of the lens has less chance of getting screwed up than the front (with the generally loose cap and filter) of the lens taking the hit. I, like many of other Canonites, have put the original lens caps in storage and purchased the "Nikon-type" - more secure.

Dellen,
Aren't there two covers, one on each end? So no matter what one end will be close to the flap of your bag.
My 2 cents

Aren't you glad you asked. I'll play along, lens cap down because it's the widest base and the heaviest end so I want that downward.

According to Canon:

Cap down.
