Lightroom CC not seeing any of my files.

I shut down normally and backed up my session yesterday.

On opening LR this morning I have a ? next to all my files on all three hard drives I am using. I tried looking for other Catalogs to open from but found none in the LR list.

I assume I need to use a Catalog backup to fix this. I have found these on my C: and they appear to be compressed and unreadable by LR.

I've tried following the directions in Wiley's Lightroom 5 but to no avail. I'm not sure what to do next. How can I use my compressed backup file and point LR at it? Or should I be doing something else.

There are days I find using Lightroom a tad less than intuitive!

Back in LR 5 I don't think the files were "zipped". Now they are. On a windows machine, find the backup file, right click and select "Extract". You get a choice where to put it. Pick where you want your catalog to be and "extract". Go there and double click. LR will open using your catalog from the backup zip file.

(I have a non critical travel computer. To answer your question and satisfy my curiosity for when I may need to do it, I practiced before posting. It worked quickly and well.)

Thanks for the help. It worked fine but - I'm still seeing question marks next to all my directories.
Should I step back through my backups until it resolves itself or am I missing something?

Did the image files move or maybe the computer thinks they moved? I've never had to do it, but you should be able to click on a folder question mark and wade through the file structure to where the folder is. That should "re-connect" the LR catalog to the images themselves.

I shut down my computer a couple days ago. When I started it up again, one of my drives did not appear in Windows File Explorer. I unplugged it and plugged it in again. It reported that it was unable to install the drive.

I restarted Windows and the drive worked just fine. A glitch in the program prevented the USB hub from working properly. On reboot it worked fine.

I at least know about this in theory but since this is across my C: and two other external drives and hundreds of directories I was really hoping not to have to do this directory by directory.

No files were moved or deleted.

Now I'm completely mystified. I've gone back about 3 weeks opening Backups and loading LR. No change all files were still tagged with the ? symbol.
I then started looking looking at where files were and found them listed all over place some on drives that were too small to hold them all. Checking with Explore confirmed that the files were still in their original locations.
I then returned to the original Catalog and to my surprise all the files are back in their correct locations and being seen by Lightroom.
So what may have have happened I have no idea.

Time for an apology. I think this has been an inadvertent error on my part.
The light went on when I realised that this coincided with a switch to Win 10. At that time I moved some files around as a precaution against data loss and it seems that in the bulk file moves many of my images were shifted around.
Mea culpa and my apologies for wasting your time. Not a complete waste however since I've now learned more about working with the Catalog ;-)
Thanks to all who contributed.

No problem. It gave me an excuse to try out recovering from a backup catalog. Nothing was at risk for me because I was using a secondary computer that had little of my important stuff on it.

I'm glad you got it figured out.

One possibility that occurs to me is that you added or unplugged a USB-connected device, and Windows, inexplicably, decided to assign new letter designation to some of the drives. That's happened to me before.

I assume that your files are still there. Check what drive letter they are located on, and check whether that matches to what LR shows for the drive under Catalog Settings.

The files are all intact and the problem was of my own making. I upgraded(?) to Windows 10 and prior to installation moved some files around outside of Lightroom.
Foolish. I should have known better.
Now fixed and thank you for your help.
