My son has a Nikon d300, as I do, but he wants to sell his and change to a Canon EOS 7D not the MK. I have little knowledge of Canon camera. If anybody out there can give a comment I would appreciate it

You just opened the floodgates! Lash yourself to the mast and hope you don't get washed away!
BTW, if he is serious about going Canon, the 7DII is an excellent choice. Especially for sports, BIF, and action shots.

A friend has a Nikon and he can fire a flash remotely from the camera, With Canon you have to have either a master flash on the camera to trigger a remote flash or something like a pocket wizard. There are a couple of other convenient things about Nikon that you can do without going into the menu but I don't remember what they are. Also, Nikon has a MP on their sensors when you compare camera for camera.

The Canon 7d mk II as well as several other Canons with Pop up flashes can trigger an off camera flash much like the Nikons. On the full frame 5d and 6d Canon does not have a pop up flash and on those you need a master flash or trigger on the hot shoe.

Both brands are excellent cameras, not sure what you mean that Nikon has a MP on their sensors.

If your son will be happy doing that, let him. I would not talk him out of it. I am a Nikon guy and understand you must feel comfortable with your equipment.

An interesting perspective, but completely inaccurate. May be true for some models, but certainly not all. My humble 4 year old T3i functions just fine as a master.

On the other hand, you might want to have a discussion with your hair stylist or fashion consultant!

Has your son articulated a reason for the change?

His friends have Canon cameras. I think he is making a mistake dumping a nice Nikon D300 for a Canon 7D but I may be wrong ....

Yes you might well be wrong! Nikon makes very good cameras, and I'm not trying to pour gas on brand wars here, but the D300 (good camera though it may be for the price) is piece of junk in comparison to either the first or second generation Canon 7D.

That said, this discussion shouldn't be about the body, it should be about overall capability and associated things. Just like actors, male or female, if it is just about the body, it's a short career.

We don't know what else is at stake here. If it is a a basic Nikon with a kit lens and no other investment, changing brands to Canon, Pentax, Sony or whatever has little consequence, while the social peer group may have some real value.

Perhaps we need to know more about the other attributes of this conversation.

I would suggest he look at the new Nikon D500 coming next months. He can then go blow all his Canon friends away!

I hope he does not have too much invested in Nikon glass, they will not work well with a canon and he will need to start over in the most expensive area of photography.

I'm sorry to see you posted that. As a dealer, making recommendations is one thing, but expressing such a partial viewpoint is unprofessional in my opinion, even if you think you are correct, or even if you are in fact correct. The style of post is unprofessional and serves to undermine your objective position.

At least Sharpie is honest about his bias.

Ya'll can do better than that, and I suspect it will not help your business in the long term. Sigh!

Of course. Typical American, child or adult.
