I read somewhere that you could expose for the sky and with PP you could create a well exposed image with no problem.
Hmm. So I had to give it a try with a scene that would test the theory. I got a surprise, as you can see below. You handle the original in any way you want and let us see what you come up with.

I tried the fix image preset in the PS Express app for the iPad and got nowhere the detail you got in your software. What software?

Here is my try at it Shakey. All Photoshop.
1. Imported your photo
2. Copied photo and then opened in Camera Raw opened for the girls and left side of picture using Exposure and lowered highlight. Added mask to this layer to open just what I wanted for the under exposed areas. Used Noisless pro to remove noise on this layer only. When opened so far a lot of noise was introduced.
3. Replaced hair for the girl on the left with something I had. It was to blown out and missing all detail.
4. Corrected some edges using clone stamp.

Using the sky as a "gray card" is a good technique. One just has to realize that one needs to use the north sky, in the northern hemisphere. One also needs to realize that the clear sky, which you appear to have had, is one zone higher than a gray card. Your second image looks quite realistic, and contains visually appropriate levels of contrast. You did quite well.

Perfect Effects 9, John. I think there is a free version, On1 software who produce it are now selling version 10.

Good job, Jim. That's pretty much as I remember it.

Shakey, with the theory in mind to expose the sky, is with the use of a flash for your main subjects so you won't have a blown out sky. If you had exposed for your subject then the sky would have been blown out, over exposed. Just a thought for next time. Although, it appears some have done a good job in pp to correct this issue.

Overall adjustments in raw. Skin tone adjustment. Masked to darken the sky and the buildings on the right as viewed.

It's amazing what can come out of the shadows, but it's not the best of quality. I think the ideal would be to find a way to expose so that the sky is just short of being blown. Perhaps using the histogram would work.

Anyway, I'm not going to ask why you were lurking about in dark alleys in Naples lol.

Well balanced interpretation, R.G. Using the histogram seems like a good idea. I get a lot of excitement by lurking in Naples dark alleys. I must remember to take my camera and photograph some of the young ladies. They know they are safe, I'm way too old for any other kind of shenanigans.
