This is a b/w version of McVeed's Tenacity image posted on the Critique site which I thought was a very nice composition but needed to be in b/w.

I didn't see mcveed's original, so I went there just now + read the comments.

I feel the color gives more information regarding what we are looking at, but even with color, I don't know this is a plant growing from a crack in a rock - without the title, it could be a weed on a sidewalk.

In the b&w it's even harder to tell what the darker matter is. Sorry :|

How does the title tell you its a plant growing in a rock? Tenacity? As far as the picture goes, does it really matter whether it is a plant growing in a vertical rock face or in a really rough sidewalk? BTW you must have pretty rough sidewalks in Washington, or is it Maine (lol).

I really like the composition, but this pic came out quite a bit darker than how it looked in Photoshop, a problem which seems to be pretty common on UHH for some reason. If you lighten it up about 1/2 to one stop, that's how it looks in my Photoshop.

You're right, not the title, the intro in which you said where shot.

I guess I just think of vertical rock faces as more interesting and challenging for plant growth than weeds on a city sidewalk. Sort of like people think of weeds in general, compared to flowers.

And the personal experience thing comes into it: I have seen and photo'd cool little trees growing out of the sides of boulders in the Cascades, but wouldn't likely look twice at a dandelion in a cracked sidewalk :)

But does it really look like a weed in a sidewalk?

Maybe more an asphalt street. And mostly because of the flat aspect. Were you looking down on it?

Only because I've seen flowers or small plants trying to eek out a living on rock faces could I see right away that this was what I was looking at. There is something about the rock that seems to lack detail. At first I thought I was looking at a grove of trees from an aerial view. I like the idea; but I've got to side with Linda on this one.

Are you talking about JackM's version, or did you also look at the original?

A snap of very little to start with which has not been enhanced by a showing in BW in my humble opinion. Lacking in impact composition is OK and technically sound.

I was commenting on the black and white version posted. I did follow your link to the color version. The flowers do stand out better in the color version.
