I have a Nikon D60 and a Panasonic FH-20 for a pocket camera. The Nikon has an APSC sensor 23.6 x 15.8 size or a 3x2 ratio.
The FH-20 has a sensor 6.12 x 4.51 or a 4 X 3 ratio. When I print 4x6 prints that were shot with the camera held vertically the Nikon prints what I shot. On the other hand the Panasonic either leaves a white margin about 1/4" wide on either side of the print. If I rotate it 90 degrees it cuts the top off of peoples heads etc. Am I right that it is the sensor ratio causing my problem and if so is there a fix for the problem? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
You will need to change the paper size in your printer software and allow the software to fit the image to the paper.
You may be able to achieve some success by setting a "crop" ratio that fits the paper you are using also.
Otherwise you are into re-sizing the image to the ratio that fits your paper.
Shaky shutter thanks for the info. I will try both ways and see what I like the best.
I address this situation a couple of different ways with my digital p&s...
1- if having them printed at "most" printing spots-- Example- Walgreens-- select digital print size when ordering.
this will print the whole picture as you saw it when snapping- it will be smaller than 4x6 (4x5.5 I think).
2- print 5x7's--- this won't crop the pic-- the digi prints fit perfect as a 5x7
3- print as suggested by "shaky" --shrink to fit option in printer software.--that works if printing at home.
Thanks Dria, I will give that a shot as we have a Walgreens close by.
I have used Walmart for printing but when I asked their photo people about it they were unable to help me.
If you load them on-line to Walgreens.com they will go into your cart as a 4x6 at 4x6 price-- THEN when you check out a screen will say--- we noticed you ave digital prints in your cart- would you like them printed in digital format? and it shows you a pic of the size difference- select yes-- the price will be the same as 4x6 (example- this week 75prints are 10cents each)
I like Wgs digital print paper better than their 4x6 paper-- it is a heavier weight and semi-gloss--not gloss-- try it :)
Thanks for the added info Dria. I will be sure to try it out.
