We got off a cruise ship in Hong Kong this morning, and there are many camera stores selling all models of Canon and Nikon cameras and lenses. Can one trust them? Has anyone had direct experience?

I chatted with a guy who was very knowledgable, asked me in what I was interested, and brought out a Nikon D7200 and an 80-400 4.8 lense at my request. He promised full authenticity and Nikon warrantee and packaging (words are cheap), and would sell me both for less than $2000 US. Do I dare go back tomorrow?

Thanks

If brought back to the UK it would be classed as a 'Grey Import' and would not be covered under the manufacturer's warranty.
One would also have to pay import duty as well.

It's probably grey. I just got a D7100, grey, with 3 lens and a bunch of accessories and a bag for a little over $900. they are all over eBay.

Thanks

Some HK sellers are trustworthy, but some are not. There is some risk involved. You never get something for nothing.

There was a thread on this, look it up... It became quite heated at the end too...

Or have it seized at the custom for being a knock-off...

I have never heard of that, but there can be problems, and you can't very well sail back to HK to exchange something. Generally speaking lenses have worldwide warranties, but camera bodies are country specific.

Does your cruise line have a recommended list of sellers in each port? Does your cruise line service desk know anything about this seller? Those might be starting places for you.

There are a million tiny shops in HK. Pretty hard to imagine the cruise line or anyone else keeping track.

You can trust them, but don't expect to get those items serviced under warranty here in the US.

My understanding from Nikon USA is that if you provide proof of foreign purchase, they will honor.

The other issue is you probably will not have any issues with the camera.

Thank you very much, everyone. I knew I would wake up to many helpful comments. We're off the cruise, so it s too late for that. I did check with our hotel concierge, and her comments pretty well tracked all of yours: probably okay, but there are some bad guys out there. I think I will pass. maybe look for a "mall" store and see what their prices are.

Thanks again.

There are "bad guys" in just about every major metropolis. For example, New York City certainly has countless rip-off camera shops taking advantage of tourists.
