I am seriously at a loss at this one.

When typing into a document, any document, one starts typing at the insertion point, fixed by placing the mouse pointer and left clicking.

When I get a little way into the story the insertion points shift all by it self. The text is then inserted in the wrong place. It is getting to be extremely annoying requiring constant cut and pasting to correct.

I have reloaded windows 7 and upgraded the MS office system and run numerous virus checkers but still have the problem. Also checked the mouse and keyboard are not the problem.

Has anyone ever seen such a problem and know of a solution.

I am not interested to replace the pc with a mac.
Other than that, thank you for your input.

Jack, It is possible that your hand is dragging over the touch pad, causing your issue. Disable it and see if it works normally. I had a similar issue and that resolved it for me. Good luck. How are things is Cuenca Ecuador? Gary

It could also be your mouse. Disconnect that after the touch pad experiment and see if that is the issue. On the touch pad, you may have the sensor set at HIGH or light touch.

I had the same problem on my laptop ... tried to turn the touch pad off, tried a new mouse and a new trackball ... !

The problem went away when I loaded Windows 10 ... I do not know the "why" or the "how" of the fix, just really glad that it does not happen anymore ...

Jack, as mentioned above it sounds like you have not turned off your Touchpad when you use your mouse. There should be one of your "f" keys that does that, and if your computer is like mine, you will have to turn off the Touchpad each time you boot up your computer.

I have never turned off the touchpad when the mouse, both wired and wireless, have been plugged in. I use Lenovo.

insman, I just looked it up, it looks like the Fn + F9 key will work. Good luck Jack. Gary

Hmmm. I've had the same problem occasionally. Are you using a wireless mouse? I am. Maybe there is RF interference with it? It doesn't seem to happen on a regular basis, but it IS very annoying.

Mine has done that forever. It happens when my laptop refreshes itself about every 3 minutes or so. I have not been able to figure it out. I just take a deep breath and work through it. It's not my mouse, my touchpad or any of the rest...it is definitely connected to the 3 minute refresh/save feature on my laptop.

Thanks Gary, I will try to figure out how to disable the touch pad and keep the mouse alive and report back to you.

I left Ecuador last August but, tomorrow, will get a new visa stamped in my US passport at the Ecuador consulate in Bangkok. Then I will prepare for a trip back to Vietnam and again to Ecuador for another tour. May just have to include Panama this time.

I have tried with the mouse usb connector disconnected. No difference.

Found out through experimenting that the problem seems to go when I, after fixing the insertion point, place the mouse pointer on the right hand elevator bar and click once. That stops the strange jumping when typing. I like Gary's suggestion and yours regarding the touch pad. Do not know how to disable it yet.
Any suggestions are very welcome.

I am not using a wireless mouth. oops make that mouse.

My problem is happening often and with disastrous effect. Never had this problem for years with this computer.

Thank you for responding

Thanks Bob, this jumping problem was getting to be disabling so I decided to so called upgrade and get an SDD and windows 10. SDD is still too pricy, $380 for 500GB, and I did not like windows 10. I use and love the background picture displays in windows 7. All my best keepers showing at random every 10 seconds. Not available in windows 10. So I went back to windows 7 and of course the same old problem.

What I described to Gary, cursor on RH elevator works. But I would love to disable the touch pad.

Thank you for participating.

I had an issue last year where the screen in focus used to jump. Made for interesting typing. There were times you had not idea where the mouse was or what was selected. Did funny things when I was booking travel through my corporate travel sites. Different dates, times, flights, hotels. I always had to check the confirmation right after the booking to see if what I got was what I wanted. Ended up being my WIRED Logitech mouse. Now have the same one in wireless and the problem stopped.
