When I shoot Raw + JPEG with the Oly OM-1 D only the JPEG appears, but a small white box with the letter J appears in the lower left hand corner.
In any event, I can't also open the Raw file and can't do anything with the small white box. Can anyone explain?
Not all editing software can open all raw files. What one do you use? Is there a raw editor program that came with your camera?

When you say only appears - where? In windows explorer on the computer? If so, explorer cannot display a RAW file. You need a RAW editor (see Linda's comment) and assign the RAW files to it. Then when you double click the file, the RAW editor should open it.

You will need to tell us what software this is happening with before we can help you. If we start listing possible causes and fixes without knowing the software we are guaranteed to get you more confused.
Sorry. I was referring to Photos. If you read my header I thought it was clear that Apple Photos was the software. I know how to open the raw file using other software including Lightroom.
I do use Apple's Photos for simple snapshots, but when I use the Olympus and shoot Raw+JPEG only the jpeg appears and a small white box with the letter J appears in the lower left hand corner.
My question simply relates to the small white box with the letter J. Clicking on it does nothing and I can't determine its purpose. Does no one else have this happen?

The word Photos in the title could be interpreted many ways since what we take with our cameras is..photos:).
See if this is helpful

IMHO Photos is not a very good raw converter for the Oly, I do better with LR or the Oly software. I don't use Photos for much at all, except for iPhone snaps.
Sounds like the j is only telling you that is the jpg

And no, your title isn't clear at all that you mean Apple photos

You can open RAW files with win 7 and 10 ( not sure about 8)
There is an add on you download , I have it for Nikon and there is one for Canon not sure about other cameras.
Thanks, that does explain it. I appreciate it. The UHH always comes through.
The URL you included does answer the question. Thanks much.
I found that Picasa worked very well when I had a PC, but not so well on the Mac Pro.
Perhaps they are more compatible nowadays. Do you use it on a Mac?
When using photos on the Mac. If you have uploaded an image recorded in jpeg and raw, there will be a J in a white box on the image when opened in photos. If you decide to process in raw, simply click the edit button in the upper right corner. Then go to the task bar in the upper left of you screen and the click on image, scroll down to "use RAW as original". Click that button. When you click done on you image you will see that your image has changed from J to R. Happy processing.
