Getting Ready for the National Finals

I am working with a school that has qualified for the National Finals of the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). There is a specified weight limit for the rocket including the two raw eggs it carries. The goal is to carry the eggs to an altitude of 800 feet and the total flight time should be 45 seconds. A parachute brings the rocket down. If the eggs break, the rocket is disqualified. More than 600 teams from across the country competed for the Finals. Only the top 100 teams will compete in May. I am so proud of these kids!

Cool shot. When we were kids, we had contests just like what you describe. I do not recall any national contests though I am sure they had them back then. My favourite rocket was the Estes Argus. Very easy to modify. My dad Had the Estes Big Bertha. My dad and the owner of a local hobby shop used to sponsor rocket contests. Pretty neat when you are only 12.

I have been involved in the hobby for 50 years...am I that old?! We didn't have competitions like this in those days. The winner of this competition not only receives over $10,000 in scholarship money, they get to go to Europe to compete in the international competition...all expenses paid.

Very cool shot, It would be great to send a camera aloft to record the flight.

They've got them. We had them in the 60's.

This is a fantastic shot, and I know that the amount of satisfaction and pride the kids get from such a beautiful launch is a thrill for you. Good luck at National Finals.

Thanks much! The kids did all of the work. I am their mainly to insure their safety and help them learn "basics." They did the problem solving.
