Can everything but the main red flower be changed to black? Is this difficult to learn? I don't have lightroom or photoshop but understand this can be done with Gimp. Any assistance is very much appreciated.

With GIMP this is easy and can be done in a number of ways.
Select the Fuzzy Selection tool (Magic Wand); set the Threshold setting to 50 (approx) and click on the red flower. You'll need to click some stray areas to ensure you have the whole flower. Raise or lower the Threshold setting if required. If you picked up the second flower, which will probably happen. Click the 'Subtract from Current Selection' button and deselect the red in the unwanted flower. Click the Colors menu and select 'Invert', Select the Bucket Fill tool; check that the 'Foreground Color' is set to black. Set the Threshold to 60 or higher. Fill the area around the red flower with black. Save in your preferred format.

You can also use the Scissors Select tool and click around the flower to create a selection and then invert. Bucket fill with black as above.

There are yet other methods Quick Mask is one or you can try Layers. If you go to http://www.gimp2tutorials.info/downloads.htm you can download 3 Pdf files which explain the tools, layers, and Colors menu in great detail. You can print out whatever lesson you need if you wish.

Here's another using the Quick Mask. Once the selection is to your satisfaction go to Select menu and click Invert. Fill with black as before. Yep, better technique and result. A little practice and you'll find it is very easy.

It's a bit off topic, but is GIMP keeping up with Photoshop upgrades? And how hard is it to install, etc.???

There have been a number of upgrades to GIMP recently, for both windows and Mac versions. It as capable as Photoshop for photo editing; plus it can handle original artwork creation and graphic design. In addition there are hundreds of plugins available to carryout various tasks. The plugins include many designed for Photoshop also.
Installation is a breeze and no more difficult than regular installations. It is also available in 64bit and 32bit versions for Windows. The program is clever enough to know which version to install automatically. If you need the Mac version just select OSX on the download selection page.
The download page is here: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ This is the latest version: 2.8.16.
For tutorials go here: http://www.gimp2tutorials.info/downloads.htm
You can print out just the lessons you need or print the whole ebook. There are three books in .pdf format covering the Toolbox; How to use Layers; The Colors menu, which handles photo editing.
Have fun.

Thanks for all that info. . . I'll keep it handy, if not for myself who is already psychologically and economically invested in photoshop, but for newbies who should be aware there are such options.

You are welcome, Ygelman. It's good to have someone broadminded enough to recognise there are other options to the excellent Photoshop and Lightroom.
