When will they spread focus points for wider coverage?

I sure wish they would spread out the focus points more to reach closer to the edge, at least to lower third or top third in landscape and portrait mode.

Bunching up several focus points in the middle third of the screen seems less useful than a few focus point spread out throughout the screen.

Sometimes I feel the highest or the top focus point isn't high enough to use without recomposing when focusing on a subject's eye. It's not a big deal when shooting wide or landscapes though. It is a big deal to me when you're close too a subject or use a wide open aperture.

My eyes are too old and not good enough for manual focus.

Use spot focusing then...

Why do you want the focus to be in the 'edge' where you have most lens problems?

Put the 'focus bulls eye' on the subject that you want in focus, activate the focusing device, lock focus, recompose, then shoot. Not nearly as complicated to do as to explain. What's the problem??

What camera?

I find that having 81 points across the screen has been more than enough for me.

I want to focus on the eye, not so much the very edge. The eyes are usually around the top third of the screen. If I frame the eyes in the middle of the screen there's too much headroom or space above the head.

Using the center point and recomposing doesn't always work for me especially if I'm in tight. Even if I'm using the upper most focus point, that focus point can be too low. Then I have to recompose which can throw off the focus at times.

This is the proper procedure. Your focal plane should not shift with a slight re-composition after focusing, especially tripod-mounted.

How many photographers who shoot without intending to crop need nearly as many focus points as we already have anyway? In film days we didn't have them. We had manual focus, and a light meter. My Hasselblads didn't even have a built in meter.

Skin, I agree! Don't know what you're using, but my 70+ points is definately not enough nor spread out far enough!
I'm sure is not an easy feat to keep adding points, but we get more all the time. As to when, you'll have to email the engineers in Japan for that answer.
Even the expensive pro model cameras don't have them.
Wait for the new Samsung to come out, that will have all your wishes!!!

SS, I'd rather have the focus points strategically spread out rather than adding more focus points. 70 focus points would be more than enough if they were spread out and strategically placed.

Maybe it's just me, but this thread does not make sense. So lets say that the DOF is 1 foot. And now we spread the focus points out. That does not get anything into focus that is outside the DOF. It takes an average of all the focus points and calculates where the focus plane is. But adding more points will not get better focus outside the DOF. Seems to me that BBF and recompose will get you the best image. But again, maybe it's just me.

I use the center spot because I shoot wildlife and I like to center them when they are on the move. Use Group Auto Focus using the center spot and Nikon puts four more around that one for a total of 5. That's all I have ever needed. I remember my Nikon FTN, I ordered the 45 degree split rangefinder focusing screen and thought it was really something over the horizontal split that came with the camera. Boy, have we come a long way baby.

I guess it depends somewhat on the camera you use.
I just checked mine, when I set it so all focus points are on (there are 81 of them), the focus points cover 3/4 of the monitor screen.
Besides having all of them on, I can select any one of them, in a matter of seconds - no need to go through the menu, the multi-choice and OK button will do it.
When I mount a 4/3 system lens (instead of a m4/3) there are only 37 focus points and this "screen" covers less than half of the monitor.
