If questions may be answered by using Google, personally I prefer Bing, then what purpose does an on-line community serve? Sure, I can get all the info and way more from a search site but I can't get conversation, interaction between actual human beings, that feeling of being part of something, even if it takes place in a virtual world. As I said before, educational and entertaining, that's what makes it worth coming back.

rmorrison1116,

If a person has a basic question, which this was at the beginning, and that person performs a simple search on Google he/she will be better prepared to ask a more detailed question. Such as; Why does a Prime Lens usually have a wider aperture than a Zoom Lens if both can reach the same focal length?

As for Bing over Google, the choice of an internet search engine is a personal choice.

I get your point, really, I do, but I'm not sure you got mine. Maybe there was more to the question then just the question. VernC is very new to the board and maybe part of the question was to get to know other members. Participate in some conversation. No question, no answers, no conversation, no meeting other members. We have a saying where I work, the only stupid question is the one not asked. It may not be 100% accurate, but it's close.

Unfortunately, there really are stupid questions, although I wouldn't put this specific one in that category. However, it did seem very much one that was positioned to see what the responses were going to be like, and when I asked the OP what his experience was his initial response was hostile. If he wants to test us, so be it, but he also left an impression in his wake.

There are certainly stupid ways of asking questions!

rmorrison1116,

I get your point, completely. I agree with what you have written in this reply.

If I remember correctly, when I first joined this group, there was a suggestion in the rules and introduction on identifying ones self if new and needed to get acquainted.

Perhaps you are correct and all he really wanted was to acquaint himself with other members of the group. But, that is not how his initial post read to me.

Anyway, I hope he received what he what looking for.

In a text based communications medium, with a few images to enhance the point, it is rather difficult if a post is not real clear in what he/she is looking for.

It's all in the words and how they are strung together.

Morrison, I agree with you 100%. The interaction is a big part of it.

I often see the words 'prime lens', what is the real meaning of prime lens? Its not clear to me.

Hi Vern. As you see the Hogs have answered your question perfectly. Consider this also; If you like the idea of a Zoom lens and want to be able to select the aperture and have it "fixed" at any zoom focal length, consider a "fixed aperture" lens ( fixed lens -prime- vs fixed aperture). The best of 2 worlds. Most zooms vary the aperture opening when zoomed in or out, fixed aperture lenses do not.

A few posts back in the chain there was a sample question presented as an example of a better question, "Why does a Prime Lens usually have a wider aperture than a Zoom Lens if both can reach the same focal length?". I'm currently waiting on a compile to complete so I'd like to take the opportunity to answer the example question. COST.
Gotta run, just got notified my compile is done, back to work...
