Mystery

Abby, my dog had been outside for about 15 minutes yesterday, I thought she would be ready to come in and opened the door. I saw that she was running around with something in her mouth. Turned out it was a small loaf of bread. She brought it to me, dropped it, and turned to sniff something on the ground. It was a small fish.

The backyard is enclosed, although it is possible a cat or raccoon may have wandered through.

Last summer we found stray vegetables outside, in good condition, not looking as if they had come from someones trash.

Here is a photo of the fish, bad photo, yes. Taken with my phone. We don't have water, stream, lake etc. on or near the property. I was thinking a large bird may have dropped it.

Is this a fish from a water source? Or would someone eat this?

Any ideas?

You might be onto something with the birds, we have a neighbor that feeds the birds bread, a lot ends up on the ground in my back yard, they drop it on the way to another neighbors tree, if the grand dogs come I have to clean up the yard very well or they eat the old bread. Bob.

If you have neighbors talk to them and ask them if they are putting out poisoned animal treats. I would also police the yard and get rid of anything you find. Those things should not be in your yard. In the early Early 70's I had a cocker spaniel which got sick and the vets could not tell why and we had to put her down. Many months later I was talking to my neighbor and he boasted he got rid of the squirrels by putting out poisoned bread in the winter. It then hit me that I had found bread in our yard at that time and picked it up thinking it strange to be there. Turns out the squirrels were coming to our bird feeder and would pull the poisoned bread into our yard (or the neighbor threw it into our yard for the squirrels). But our pup going out into her own yard would get it and it cost her life. All I can say is be cautious, and do some digging into the source.

Wow, thank you. I didn't think of that and it is a real possibility. We live in a rural community and I would imagine that the nearby farmers may well have a problem with rodents.

While not an expert, I would venture that the fish is some sort of spotted trout. That might help in identifying from where it came.

Lois, perhaps it a flying fish and died while migrating and fell in your yard.

Lois, I think you missed the point here. You were meant to use the loaf and fish to feed a multitude.

Sounds pretty biblical to me.

Actually, the feeding of the 5,000 was the first thing to come to mind. No multitudes available though. ! Was wondering if there was a message there, but couldn't figure out what it was. Go to the grocery? Stay home and eat leftovers???

Last night we were up all night with raccoons. They were on the roof and I decided to give up when I realized that at 1:30 am I was hanging out of the upstairs bathroom window, brandishing a mop, yelling at them and chucking water bottles at the little beasts. I thought if anyone saw, they would like I had lost my mind. I was thinking that they had brought a peace offering before their night shenanigans.
