Beneath the Dam

I am glad we have a section where I can post strange images and see what others' reactions may be.

My subjects are still there and water is still up so there is opportunity, and no other photographer would ever go there so there won't be a crowd...

Oh what a cool place!!! Only negative comment is cutting the birds in half on the bottom. You need to go here again and again and again. Love the reflections, the fog, the birds, the stairs, everything about it. It is ICONIC.

It is only January. In November this will still be the best image I have seen all year!!!!

Fascinating shot, Minnie! Perfect pp IMO for mood and mystery. Of course I can see all kinds of shots-within-shot, but like Piet mentioned, the main thing I'd like to see is a tiny trim off the left side and the bottom - as shown below.

What a terrific location for unique and compelling images.

Thank you so much Piet! It is so odd, I was at a loss as to whether it might have any appeal to anyone except me. Sometimes we have images like that.

Those ain't birds, that's the water. I started to clone it out, and still can:)

Thanks Linda. Of course I took a bunch when I found out the birds had set up a branch office down there, so I may already have one with more or less of that bottom abutment. I like the crop!

Thank you Dave, and yes, I have figured out that you like the dramatic monochrome look, so do I! This one is processed with a bit of the grunge stuff, I like to tinker with it in nature images, since I don't do much people photography. It's a fun way to work with images to get more drama out of ordinary things like a bunch of gulls and egrets under an ugly spillway structure.

Needed a study but its gone from yep well its OK to superb with a little contemplation. Great place and great feel to it. Very strange image in many ways but in an interesting way. The crop was needed.

Magic shot, not just because of the birds but the glowing light in the upper right. It seems to be beaming down on the central heron/egret whatever it is. It certainly is a shot that grows on you. You have inspired me. We have a huge dam within half an hours drive. Will be visiting there very shortly. Top pic, I love it.

Gee thanks, Billy, glad you liked this odd one. It is not the usual thing that's for sure. Is crop a better solution than cloning? Curious...

Thank you Peter. It's one of those rare images that the camera improved on reality, it is a dark ugly place where no one goes except fisher-birds and what little light there is drifts in from the gaps in the the concrete pillars that hold up the spillway. You'd have a blast there, it is your kind of place!

Thank you! I had been there once before and mean to go back. In our quest to find something new to shoot, we sometimes find strange but unusual places, always gotta be curious enough to try something. Just because it isn't pretty doesn't mean it won't make a fun photograph.

I'm wishing I lived closer to your digs, Min!
That looks like situation of constant opportunity to mine constantly changing images as the birds move about the stark foundational basis of the dam and of your Scene.

I've gone down in the thing before chasing birds, but kinda forgot about it. A cold rainy day with little else to do enticed me back. It does have many possibilities for unusual photos. I'd encourage anybody that lives near a dam to check out the underbelly of their spillway...
