First off... did you empty the trash after deleting photos from IPhoto? Until the trash is emptied the files still exist on your disk IN the trash folder ....
Once you clear off some space, consider these suggestions....
Purchase a pair of external disk drives, set ONE up as a Time Machine Backup to back up your data.... I would suggest a minimum of a 2 TB external.
The second external should be where you store all of your photos. You will need to move your IPhoto library from your internal to your external then reopen it with iPhoto so it learns where it is. From now on all your photos will be in iPhoto, BUT on your external drive....
Again, you need a large drive - 2 TB should be the minimum, but you can go bigger.
With a MAC, best to keep plenty of space free on the boot drive, so the more stuff you can put on an external the better in many cases.
You will need to tell Time Machine to backup from the new external for photos, it will not select it by default.
Get another drive or a bigger one.

you do not say whether she is saving raw or jpeg. all raw files should be stored on an external drive (preferably two, one for photos and one for backup). only store jpeg photos on your laptop that you want to access and share with friends, the rest should be stored on an external drive. with the limited space available, you cannot store every photo. be selective and choose the best of the best.

Ive answered this question 3 times in the last few days.
external Hard drives are not very expensive 5 TB for $129 last time I looked. you can put a LOT of photos on one of those ( which I do )
also , I joined amazon photography cloud.
Unlimited uploads of all your photos in most formats $12.00 per year. Im over 12,000 and adding more every day.
cant beat that. IF you have Amazon Prime its free for you...
I would back up with reliable Back ups and then remove files from the Mac Computer.them from

I save my photos to an external. Once a folder reaches DVD size I burn it to 4.3g. This seems to work pretty well since I've had a crash or two over the years and was able to recover every photo dating back to 2002.
